| Request anesthesia from vet?? Hi all.... I need some advice on spaying my two yorkies... 1. Should I get them both done at the same time? 2. Should I request the vet to use a specific anesthesia? (Oxiglobin? any other suggestions?) 3. Will they do my little one (5 1/2 months) if she hasn't had her first cycle yet? Someone told me that if I wanted her to always have a smooth belly (boobs not affected by hormones yet.. still has the "puppy" belly and not the "nipple effect" ) that I needed to have her spayed BEFORE her cycle begins. 4. Is it better to leave them overnight or bring them home? Does the size matter in recovery? Dixie is 4 lbs and Daisha is 2 lbs. 5. What does this procedure usually cost? Again, does the size matter? I am calling my vet this morning to ask these questions to her, but wanted to get other's opinions. I saw a webpage about a tiny Yorkie that had a procedure done and it DIED. I have been scared to death ever since!!! http://www.yorkiepup.com/yorkiepupfeature.html Does anyone know anything about these breeders? |

| You should ask the vet for Isoflurane gaz . I have seen Yorkies from 2 to 4 pounds spayed or neutered and they were well after the surgery . The most important point is to have confidence in your vet and ask questions . |

| Yes, like Deigo just stated, the anestethia that you should request is called Isoflorane. But, in addition you should have the vet do a pre-surgery anestethia test to see if they can even handle the Isoflorane. Some vets include it, and others it's an additional charge, but well worth it in case they have a reaction. As for getting them both spayed at the same time, it really doesn't make that bit of a difference. It will cost twice as much all at once, but then at least one won't be jumping all over the one that got surgery because they want to play. They will both recover together. The vet will most likely do the surgery on both. Even small ones get spayed. The vet can also give you a heads on on recovery for small babies. And it's usually up to them if they want to keep the dog overnight for observation. Some vets do and some don't, but I think that if they do want to keep them that it's a good idea. It shows that they care and have some concern for how the dog is recovering. I know it's a scary thing. I just booked Deegan's neutering appointment, and my hands were sweaty getting off the phone. But just try and tell yourself that it is a routine surgery and it needs to be done, and they will be fine. Oh yeah. Another thing. If you are planning on getting them tattooed or microchipped, consider having it done while they get spayed, so that they won't feel any pain. It can be a little uncomfortable because it's a fairly large needle. Hope I've been helpful.

| I had my too done at the same time and liked it because they both had the same down time. It wAs $110 for the spay and $90 for the neuter. I had their baby teeth pulled and had them microchipped at the same time. I dont think size really matters in recovery. Jewels is 4 lbs and did fine.

| I have my little Coco getting spayed this thursday, and I am nervous. But I also asked about Isoflourane (sp?) gas. I was having her vet do it but I kept feeling realllllly scared, too scared. So I am now going else where where I feel more comfortable. It's costing me $50, and they will pull any teeth if need be. Vets charge anywhere from $!50-$400 for that surgery but there are lots of clinics that do a great job that do it for a lot less because they know how important it is to have your dogs neutered and spayed. You should definetely do it before a heat cycle. In my opinion, you should have them done together, so one isn't bugging the other ones recovery time. As for leaving them over night, it is up to the vet/clinic doing the procedure, most of the time it is so routine, they will only keep them most of the one day. If they fear complications, they will keep overnight. My Coco is 2lbs and like 10 oz. But the clinic assured me that they work on kittens less than a lbs and they do just fine. Good luck.
