Feeling frustrated: No resolution, yet!! Hi all I am feeling a bit frustrated with Jack's Diarrhea. Still no resolution. I dont want to explain the whole story again some of you might recall his situation. Ok here it goes. Jack (15weeks old) about 4 weeks ago ate the foam from his bedding ( The cover did not cover the bottom of the bed completly). He started having diarrhea. I took him to the vet and brought a stool sample along. They found nothing when they did the fecal float. They gave him amoxicillian and I think its called meclizide (its a binder). Well he did great on it the stool was fine. I would like to add that he has not vomited or been listless or stopped drinking and eating he is normal in every way other then the diarrhea. As soon as I stopped the meds it started again. So the vet put him back on it again. It helped the dirrhea once again. Same thing happened this time so he mentioned trying a lamb and rice dog food. so I am now. He is on California Natural. My question is how long does it take for the pups to adjust to the new food before you see it gets better?? What else besides the boiled chicken and rice could I give him that will help but not mask problems??? Should I have blood work done on him?? Or should I have them do another fecal float?? I am just frustrated I want him to get better. There are many details I left out but if anyone can relate to this let me know also. I posted a few times about Jack so I didnt want to repeat myself. Thanks Jack and Mandy's Mom

Since you've tested for just about everything else, the thing that grabs my attention is the foam he ate. The fact that he's still having problems suggests to me that he may have some of the foam wedged in his digestive tract. My sister's Standard Schnauzer ate one of her son's small toys and was tested and treated for everything from worms to pancreatitis and she ended up having to have surgery to have this thing removed. They were able to see it in ultrasound. Don't think you can see foam this way, but I know it's one of the things we're very careful about keeping from our dogs because it can cause these problems if ingested. Got my fingers crossed for you. CJ

Thanks for the update. I know what you mean about them getting into and eating everything. One of mine got into a slug this morning. Ugh. Good luck. I usually feed mine scrambled eggs, or oatmeal or canned pumpkin depending on what's up with them. Pumpkin seems to bind them, but my Yorkies usually won't touch it plain - mixed with some turkey baby food, they sometimes will. Yogurt seems to be good for any type of GI problem, but same as the pumpkin - some will eat it and some won't. At least he doesn't seem to be suffering from all of this as much as you are. Hang in there. CJ

Yorkie Lover Donating Member | I would tell you to wait and see how he does on the new food...when Magic was about 3 months she ate some chocolate and got very sick, from that point on she would have loose stool anytime she ate anything weird, we would put her on meds and she would get better and then take her off and she would get sick again...it went on like this for about three months before our vet finally told us that her disgestive tract was sensitive now due to the chocolate and we now have her on a lamb and rice diet and she seems to be doing great now...not sure if your situation is the same but you may now have a puppy with a sensitive stomach, with just means they need a little extra love!!

WHen Daisy & Sophie had coccidia, it took a couple of weeks of feeding them a boiled chicken & rice diet before I could put them back on puppy food. Everytime I mixed in some puppy food with the chicken/rice, they would have diarrhea again. Maybe you should stick with the chicken & rice for a bit longer.

My 2 year old cousin had diarrhea for a few weeks, wasn't sick just the diarrhea. The doctor told her mom to give he rice, and also the water that is left over when you boil rice, bannanas, breads and cheese. He said these types of food have certain sugars in them that help you to have a "firm" stool. I would of course double check with the vet before trying any of this since this was a diet for a person rather than a dog. A few days after eating rice with some cheese melted, a bannana a day and especially the water left from the rice she was back to normal. I would atleast try the plain white rice and the left over water since you know it's ok to feed him that.
