| Spaying???? Hi! I wanted to thank everyone for all their help. This site is amazing!! I am learning so much and am completely prepared for my baby when she arrives on the 21st of Novemeber!! I am reading so much about Spaying and something called an e-collar and you have to put the puppy in a onsie (like a human baby onsie??). What is all this about. When I bring home my baby from being spayed (which wont be for awhile of course, I like to be prepared and know things in advance) what am I supposed to do with her. Can she pee normally? Why the onsie or this e-collar?? She has to take pain meds? Can someone just give me a synopsis of all that is to come with the spaying process? thanks so much! |

| When Layla was spayed she went in in the morning and came home at night. An e collar is a plastic collar that goes around their neck to keep them from getting at their stiches. But this is horrible uncomfortable they can't eat or sleep well in it so most of us just skip it and instead use an infant onesie- You can buy them at walmart- 3 in a pack- When Layla was spayed she was 3 lbs and the premie fit great. You just snap it up under their bums and it is so much more comfy She will be able to pee normal but depending on how she reacts to the meds you might have to hold her up- Layla wasn't able to stand when she came home because she was so out of it. Make sure you have a few days off to spend with her- she will need constant supervision to be sure she is safe and leaving her incision alone. She SHOULD come home with pain meds- this is MAJOR surgery and will hurt quite a bit- that being said- Layla did not come home with pain meds (arg.. stupid vet- we dont' go to him anymore) she just slept and after 2 days was walking around normal- didn't SEEM to be in pain although i'm sure she was *sigh* |

| yes for the most part she will only need it at night when you can't keep an eye on her- some people cut a little hole- myself- Becuase Layla pees outside iw oudl just undo it when we went outside. And keep in mind she can't have a bath until her stitches come out so there will be probably at least 10 days that she can NOT get at her incision- so a onesie is probably your best bet- but some dogs don't even care to bother with it. |

| Callie got spayed the last week of October. I was TERRIFIED, but everything went well. I didn't have to put a collar, or a onsie on her. I of course researched all of this stuff, but the vet assured me that I would not need any of these things. She had internal stitches that are absorbable. Her incision was like, 3 cm, and it was not what I expected. You could see where the edges were approximated but no stitches on the outside, I don't know how he did it, but it was GREAT! She didn't lick at the incision, she actually didn't seem to notice it except when I would touch to see if it was tender (which she doesn't react to anymore). Callie was jumping around like nothing happened when I picked her up. She was a bit tired the next day, not sure if it was pain or just general malaise. I would have given her aspirin, but duh aspirin shouldn't be given post-op so didn't. She was back to her old self 2 days after the procedure. Hope this helped! How exciting to be getting a baby York!

| Ella had her spay done yesterday, and she is currently wearing a onesie while sleeping on my feet. She's pad-trained, so we decided to cut the flap off her onesie so she could pee without waiting for us to unsnap it. Now it's just like a long t-shirt, but it's still long enough to keep her from easily getting at the stitches. I was really worried, but she's come through pretty well. She didn't want to be picked up yesterday, but now I'm trying to figure out how we're going to keep her at a "low activity leve" for 8 more days--she's already running around with her toys and jumping on the couch! YT is great for getting ideas--you've definitely come to the right place to get prepared for everything your Yorkie is going to throw at you!

If the vet that is going to do the spay won't dispense them, I'd find a new vet. Some vets don't give them because they think the dog needs to feel pain so they stay quiet. Well, pain meds can make them sleepy which is good and this is abdominal surgery. It has got to be extremely painful, so I would insist on meds.

| Thanks for the info, I'm calling the vet Monday. I think the vet also told me if she went into heat I would have to wait 3 weeks have to have it done. I see no reason to let her go into heat if I'm going to have her spayed. I'm still scared but I know I'm not only one who's crazy about their little baby girl. |

| Thanks great info, Juicy goes next week, I'm a bit scared but i know it will all work out fine. She is also getting her baby canine teeth removed ( since they wont fall out and arent even loose and her adult canines are almost done coming in) and getting mirco chipped all at once the vet insisted it was the best way to do it. I saw another post that someones furbaby had to stay over night, is that common??
