Senior Yorkie Talker | Coat Issues again! hey everyone! so idk if anyone remembers, lol, but i posted, not too long ago, about Shelby's coat getting thin. well, i changed her food and added the salmon oil (its been about 3 1/2 weeks now) and i have noticed some improvement in her coat on her head and face area and top half of her body.... however, the spot near her rear has gotten worse! It is definitely balding now and her skin looks pinkish/reddish in that area.... she has not been scratching but she has been LICKING??!! she seems to be licking that area a lot lately i also stopped her bi-weekly groomings (she has skipped her last 2 groomings) and i have been keeping her maintained for the past 4 weeks.... she has a vet appt on monday but are there any suggestions for us until then?? thanks in advance u guys

| I wish I could help, but I don't have any suggestions - I think you are on the right track with the vet visit on Monday. Good Luck! |

| Is it bright red or more pinkish? My collie had an outbreak of demodex mites and the area was pinkish and she lost her hair in that area. All dogs have these mites but you typically never see them but when a dog has a compromised immune system, the vet can see them in a scraping and it causes the hair loss. Hope that's not what your baby has. But my collie did get over it - and with no medication - collie's are super sensitive to the medications they use to treat it so we did nothing and then I switched to a raw diet and it went away and has not come back. |

as for the vet visit.... Shelby is totally normal the vet did blood work, a "scraping" and checked her out completely and she is fine Shelby's blood work came back with flying colors.... her "bald" spot is not not a bald spot because there is hair growing there Shelby just insists on licking and gnawing at it so she "cutting" the hair lol.... as for the vomiting, i have to do away with the Salmon Oil i started putting in her food to help her coat cause it looks like it was upsetting her stomach and she is now on a prescription diet until her stools become completely normal again!! she is also on medication for the next week and a half to help settle her poor tummy and stop the vomiting.... (i was up til 4am the night b4 the vet visit) my lil girl was vomiting every hour to an hour and a half anyway, she has already stopped vomiting and her stool was a lot closer to normal as of last night so she is going to be fine.... as for the "bald" spot.... idk what to do to make her stop licking and gnawing at it i also had her 'glands' cleaned out thinking they might be full and she was gnawing because they were bothering her.... but the vet said her glands werent bad at all.... i havent changed anything as far as laundry detergent and what not so idk what can be irritated her so badly back there.... So ya, sorry for the "novel" but I just wanted to let everyone know what the outcome so far is.... any suggestions about the gnawing and licking?? thanks everyone

| Have you tried seameal? Some users on here will swear that solid gold seameal gives your yorkie a thicker coat and improves its color. My little girl knawed and chewed on her leg, so she also had a bald spot. The top of her head was looking to go bald too, and her hair was very very thin. I didnt know if it was allergies or what. I switched her from Eukanuba to Wellness Puppy and also rubbed "hot spot" medicine that we picked up from walmart on her each night before we went to bed. I don't know if it was the food or the medicine but she seems to be leaving it alone and the hair is starting to grow back. Her hair is still very thin, so i was researching it on here and it seems that everyone with the same issues is going with the seameal. As soon as i make it to the pet store i will be picking some up myself. Hope this helps.... |
