| Hi guys! The reason you can't spay whilst on heat is that the blood vessels are all enlarged, so its really easy for the dogs to bleed to death. We didnt know that when we sent our dog in, and all the vet told us was that it would cost more, not that it was a risk. Anyway, we went to pick her up and the vet told us that when they had brought her out they realised she had internal bleeding and they needed to take her back into theatre! Thank goodness she was ok (after a week in the vet at our expense!). So I would recommend that you make 100% sure that they're not in heat before you take them in. I asked the vet why they didnt tell us, and she said "Thats why we call it a practise. Because we are all practising these things, and there are always risks" |

| is there anything else i should be doing while she is in heat? she seems to be feeling good, eating, drinking, playing, being herself. she is tolerating the diaper really well, and doesnt bother with it, i take it off so we can go out, and she just runs and runs! i just called the vet and cancelled her spay for tomorrow, and they rescheduled her for the 25th- do you think that is too soon to do!? ![]()

| Senior Yorkie Talker | Dara 311, My vet told me to wait atleast 4 weeks from the time she came into heat to schedule her spay. The heat usually lasts 3 weeks (maybe shorter, maybe a little longer for some dogs). Daisy is scheduled to be spayed on November 20, which is right at 5 weeks since she came into heat on October 18. My vet told me it is best to get them done as soon as they get out of heat instead of waiting a couple of months down the road. I personally think you will be fine getting her spayed on November 25.

Awww.....I know how you feel...I hated leaving Daisy when she first went in. Her bleeding actually stopped last Thursday so she didn't bleed a full 2 weeks. She is still a little fiesty though, so I am having to keep an eye on her. She has been a lot more lovable & hasn't left my side through all of this. I will be glad to get her fixed so we don't have to deal with this again. How big is your little one?
