Hi guys! The reason you can't spay whilst on heat is that the blood vessels are all enlarged, so its really easy for the dogs to bleed to death. We didnt know that when we sent our dog in, and all the vet told us was that it would cost more, not that it was a risk. Anyway, we went to pick her up and the vet told us that when they had brought her out they realised she had internal bleeding and they needed to take her back into theatre! Thank goodness she was ok (after a week in the vet at our expense!). So I would recommend that you make 100% sure that they're not in heat before you take them in. I asked the vet why they didnt tell us, and she said "Thats why we call it a practise. Because we are all practising these things, and there are always risks"
