MVD is a form of a liver shunt... a liver shunt can be fixed in most cases with surgery. MVD however can not be fixed. They treat it with different medicines or supplements plus diet.. etc.. A liver shunt is usually 1 large vain that is shunted over the liver... and MVD is MANY SMALL vains... so you can see why you can not fix MVD with surgery. There are MANY tiny vains... where as a liver shunt is a larger vain. Thats the basic idea in human terms. Some dogs never show signs of MVD and some develop signs later in life.. you just never know because every dog is different of course. I was told my kodie will probably live a normal healthy life... he really doesnt have any signs of the disease, except his liver counts go up and down. He is however very tiny and never gains weight. Some times that isnt a clear way of telling if your baby has MVD but a few vets opinions were that is a sign of the disease. Usually with a liver shunt a pup will be tired after eating. Did you get my articles I sent to you through email or was that someone else? | |

| Thanks a lot for your information. I made appointment to one doctor (he is a liver specialist) in New York. I just simply can't go to Cornell (nobody will drive me for 5 hours to Cornell). I hope I'll get a good advice here in Manhattan. Thanks a lot again for all your information |

| I have a 6month old male Yorkie that is being tested for a liver shunt. I had the bile salts test done and they were high, so on the 31st he is going for an ultrasound. I am told the ultrasound will cost about $285. I really wish I didn't have to spend the money, but I have to know so Indy can be treated. My vet just put Indy on the Hills science diet L/D for liver disease. Kodiesmom is great and gave me some great websites that were really helpful. Good luck! |
