♥ love my girls!! ♥ Donating Member | Green Olives...Bad for Yorkies?? Tonight I indulged in my favorite adult drink....dirty martini (gin)--LOVE them!!! Yummmm! Anyway, somehow I ended up buying large green olives that still had pits , unbeknownst to me until tonight. BUT...who am I to let a good olive go to waste! So, I'm scraping olive "meat" off the pit with my teeth, and Bella is in my lap sniffing. She licks my fingers, so I let her lick the pit while I'm firmly holding onto it...don't want that big, hard thing going down her tiny little throat!! She licks it, then starts using her teeth to scrape what she can off it. I went to get another olive, and this time just bit off the ends so she'd have a starting point, and she totally worked at scraping the rest of the olive (maybe 1/2 of it was left) until she had eaten all the olive meat off that pit!!! I was thinking....she's definitely a Momma's girl!! She thinks latte's are the bomb (she's only barely tasted them) and she love green olives...a staple in my lovely martinis! Does anyone know if olives are bad for dogs? I know they're high in salt, so eating much would probably be bad, but is there anything wrong with a little bit??? AND, is coffee (if it's decaf of course) absolutely terrible for them? Not that I'd ever give her much at all, but would it be bad to let her have a taste every now and then?? (I didn't know if it was in anyway toxic in the way that chocolate is?) |

| I imagine that the extremely high sodium content of olives would be bad for small dogs and could affect their kidneys, but just this once probably was okay I dunno about coffee My girls are hyper enough without that

| I'm sure the tiny bit of olive once in awhile probably won't hurt her, but every day would be a lot of sodium for that little one! Coffee-even decaf-still has some caffeine in it. I think that caffeine is one of the reasons chocolate is bad for dogs, so I'd stay away from giving her any of that. Now, if you're just dipping your finger in it and letting her lick it off, it's probably fine-she won't get that much that way. Who knows how many things my two have tasted that way from my husband letting them check things out that way . That "tiny finger dip" is how we discovered that Emma is a snob-and likes pickles, Cool Whip, and wine, but only red. She turns her nose up at white!

| Yes, coffee can be toxic in the same way as chocolate. Even caffeine free coffee still contains caffeine...It's just a lesser amount. Avoid Giving Your Dog Toxic Foods "The symptoms of coffee toxicity are similar to the symptoms of chocolate toxicity, and just as serious, if not more so." Aside from the high sodium content...generally speaking, fruit pits/seeds are toxic to dogs and olives are fruits, so it's possible that the pit could be toxic to dogs, but I don't know for sure.

| Caffeine and theobromine is what makes chocolate toxic to dogs. Theobromine is also found in tea and colas.

I knew fruit pits were toxic to dogs, which is why I held the pit and let her chew off the olive (besides how hard and sharp it is...I don't think swallowing that, even in pieces, would be a good idea....even if it weren't toxic!!) I'm sure the next time I have a dirty martini at home....probably next year!!!....I'll have the pitted olives anyway. I was upset that I couldn't just plop them in my drink and eat them whole....still a little steamed that I didn't realize when I bought them they weren't pitted! Thanks for all the info!! I'm glad to know that olives are not toxic, even though the salt is obviously no so good.

Bella likes apple I have one of those corer/slicer tools that you just press down on the apple, and presto!! I cut off any core that remains (including all the seeds!!!) and then cut it into tiny chunks. I only give her one slice cut into chunks...not really sure how much I should let her have, but she eats all of that! I'm always worried about filling her little tummy up on snacks instead of food...as little as she eats anyway, I want to make sure she is getting all the nutrients she needs! Little does she know, if she'd eat more of her food, I might be tempted to give her more snacks (healthy ones of course!!)...but alas, she isn't much of an eater. She does like her food, though---I can even use it as treats for doing tricks! I think she just likes to be hand fed, but eventually she has to resort to eating it herself...poor baby

| Oh yeah, Miko loves apples too...Green, not red just like his mommy. LOL! Watermelon (seedless, of course) is another favorite with our dogs.
