| Wow, I know that seems alot to you for your vet charges but to me those prices are great. I am in CA and our vet visits are crazy!! A normal office visit is $62, the last ER visit was $856 and they diagnosed colitis!! If if makes you feel any better, I have spent over $6500 in the last year on Brooke's medical care for GME, Granulomatous Meningioencephalitis, an inflammatory brain disease and she is only 2 years old!!

| Thanks so much for the replies...I will definitely book mark this page. I do think part of the problem is that the vet is too close and too easy to go to. Even though Im an Rn and should be calm I tend to get panicky when my dogs seem to be suffering. Everytime I took them in to the er vet it seemed to be an emergency...I never took them to the er vet for itching...Im not that panicky. But I have taken two of them in for diarrhea and vomiting and theyve given them antibiotics and fluids. I definitely could have waited till the next day to see the regular vet....they are so little though and I know they can dehydrate so fast. The other times to the er vet have been that darn reverse sneezing or like the other night with my Maltese...trouble breathing. I do like the ideas of setting money aside whether a credit card or a savings for this alone but right now money is pretty tight. Thanks for the great ideas. |

| Did it out of love! I had a 12 yo yorkie that for the last year and 1/2 has had some health issues. I have done my very best to keep up with them as best as I could with it being just me trying to take care of my 3 fur babies on a 9.00hr wage not counting what it costs to survive. At the time when I purchased all of them, I was married and my husband made GREAT money. But for the last 10 yrs I've been on my own trying to take care of them. It's been a tough battle but one I fought in order to keep them for myself. Well, I have a Shih Tzu that has eye problems (dry eye) and she's going blind despite the many trips to the vet to help her. The last vet she saw finally told me that there was nothing short of an expensive surgery that MAY or MAY NOT help her. She also has very small ear canals so she has ear infections almost all the time. My oldest yorkie, who is almost 15, battled patella luxation early on in her life in both of her knees that had to have surgery on both to fix, but has faired well in all other areas. She's recently developed a cough but time will tell what will happen with that. During the last year or so, the other yorkie started having bladder problems. I would let her out and she'd do her business and not long after I'd find large puddles of pee in the floor. I'd go to work and come home and find that she soaked the towel in her crate and was laying in her urine. The urine smelled strongly of cat urine. I took her to the vet and they said it was a UTI. Got the medicine and that seemed to help. 2months later same thing all over again. She was treated 3 times for the UTI when now I feel it wasn't that at all. For the last several months she has been dribbling in the floor and having a hard time controlling her bladder. She would have bouts of soaking herself. The last time I took her to the vet which was about a month ago, he ran blood tests, urine tests, and xrays only to tell me that she had a high PH in her urine but he found nothing to indicate a serious problem. He said she had an 'innie' vag ina and that she had bacterial vaginitis because of it but if I kept her clean and put the antibiotic ointment on it when needed that it would clear up. She only seemed to get worse. I am unemployed and have been for 4 going on 5 months and have spent all that I had to help her. The only choice I had left was to find her a home with someone that could afford to take care of her. The lady that got her just lost a yorkie 8 months ago and needed a friend to fill the hole that her loss left her with. I felt this was my babies chance to get help that she so desperately needed. The woman is taking her to the veteranarian hospital today and in this area, that place is the best around. One I could never afford! She feels Savannah has diabetes and from I've read that is pretty expensive to have diagnosed as well as treated. I have mourned for 2 days even though I did what I did for her. Out of my own selfishness I wanted to keep her with or without being able to give her the care she needed because I knew I wouldn't handle losing her. To me, it's worse than watching them suffer knowing they are suffering! Ya know? It hurts BAD but I know at least this way she has a chance to live a few more years(hopefully) comfortably. Lord knows I tried and the most upsetting part is all the money I paid that I struggled to pay to help her and be able to keep her and make her healthy that didn't do anything. It makes me feel like I failed her. That's the hardest and biggest pill to swallow. The only thing that gives me comfort besides her getting what she needs is that this lady is going to keep up with me and let me know what they find out at the hosp, and she's going to keep up with me letting me know how she's doing. I can also go and visit her from time to time. That helps!!! I MISS HER!!! I would never tell anyone to do what I just did unless you can honestly know when you're doing it that it was out of a last ditch effort to help them. I will not get over this one anytime soon!!! |
