Itchy bumps on tail - vet treatment hasn't helped! Hi everyone Tootsy has had itchy bumps on her tail (near the base) The bumps are not red just flesh color and they itch. She is also itchy generally. The vet gave her a steroid injection and an antibiotic, but, although the itching improved, she still has the bumps. I wondered if anyone else's Yorkie has had anything similiar. The vet felt it was probably insect bites. I find that anti-histamine cream stops her scratching her tail. I have looked all over for more bumps and have found a couple here and there on her body but not many. If it was a food allergy surely it would be a more widespread rash? I have been rinsing her very well after her bath now just in case it has been caused by conditioner on her skin. I am going to get an oatmeal shampoo and conditioner this week to try and soothe her itches but I would like to know what is causing them. I really don't want her to have more steroids and antibiotics. She is up to date on he Frontline so it is not fleas. I would be grateful for any advice. Luv Yvonne

I would get a shampoo from the Vet (anti fungal) and NO CONDITIONER. And bath her 1x a week and rinse very, very, very well.

Thank you for the reply. I hadn't thought of a fungal infection. Do you get bumps with a fungal infection? I will get her a antifungal shampoo and see if it works. (It will be added to my large collection of dog shampoos and conditioners!!!) The problem with not using conditioner is getting out her tangles - if I don't use one her hair is wild! Perhaps they make one with an antifungal treatment in it? Thanks again. Luv Yvonne xx

Stick with 1 b/c using too many different products on her skin may be the problem or adding to the problem. I stopped using conditioner a long time ago, as this was yet another 'product' that would sit and leave a reside on her skin. I feed her fish oil and vit E - which helps with skin and coat. I brush her coat just before a bath to get out any matts or knots - then I wash her and rinse very, very well. Then I dry her with a towel, brush out the matts and knots again, then either air dry (in the summer) or blow dry (on low) in the winter.

Yes, I also brush her out before I bath her and afterwards as well. It definitely helps but she has such fine hair that she really needs a conditioner to tame it. I think you may be right about the different products I have tried. I keep looking for the 'perfect' product! I have just looked at photos on the internet showing fungal infections of the skin and her bumps do not look anything like the fungal infections they show! Should I leave out the antifungal shampoo and go with a mild shampoo and conditioner for allergies? Luv Yvonne xx

I don't know...Roxy gets bumps from allergies and scratching, the raw skin allows bacteria to enter which causes the bumps, also could be yeast. So I got an antibacterial and antifungal shampoo from the vet - it does seem to help ~ if not I would get a mild shampoo for sensitive skin
