| Donating YT 1000 Club Member | Do they itch all over, or is it always the same spot? Max frequently scratches his neck, where his collar is, at first I thought fleas, then I took his collar off, thinking it was irritating his skin, you girls got me thinking now.Either way we are in the extremely slow process of switching from RC to NB potato formula.

| So yesterday I went to my local pet supply place and talked to the guys there about this whole food thing. They told me the best thing to do if you suspect food allergies is to switch them to a fish and potato based food...no chicken, lamb, beef, corn, wheat, or soy. They recommended Wellness - also, if the dog doesn't like the fish they said venison or duck would be okay too. They also recommended salmon oil to go with the food. They told me it to switch them over a 5 or so day period and that I wouldn't see results for about 3 weeks. My picky yorkies loved the food - I didn't even have to hand feed them Hopefully this does the trick - I will let everyone know.Meanwhile we're going to try benadryl - Johnny was itching all night and kept me up!!! |

| Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Well, I love raw .But, if kibble is the route - I don't think Natural Balance is the *best* route. Partly bc of the protein content. But mostly bc if allergies are really a concern, I'd choose a fish based kibble like: Wellness Core Ocean, Orijen, Taste of the Wild Pacific Stream.

| I don't understand what you mean by the protein in NB?

| Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Bc it's only 20-21%, which might not be great long term. Most average kibbles have about 28% protein content. So, trying to find one closer to that % might be healthier for your baby.

| I don't recommend the Natural Balance. I tried the allergy formula and Lilly still itched with it, I didn't see any change what-so-ever! I'm still on the mission for a food that doesn't cause her allergies to act up, I'm currently feeding Wellness Small Breed Super 5 Mix and it's almost as if her allergies have gotten worse ![]()

) Ok so they make the dummy more of a dummy with wrong infomation. LOL I guess you can't believe everything you read which makes it hard to know what the correct levels should be. We even have people with degrees in the field with contradicting info. Oh well I guess thats like with everything....

| I lost my precious Roscoe to kidney failure just last June. It still has left a hole in my heart (and my DH's). After loosing him to kidney failure I started researching his pedigree along with the food I was feeding him. His history of health (going back to the 5th generation) was negative of kidney disease. Honestly, I was hoping it was the excuse instead of my bad choices to his health. I then took a serious look at the food I was feeding him. The food was balanced however I wonder if the source of the proteins were good. Again, more digging and I found that I was not happy with the brand's choices of animal proteins. Bottom line - we have to make the right decision, the right choices for our furbabies because they don't have the power to choose. I know now that my babies (aged and youth) are getting the highest quality food and treats that I can purchase. It's the least I can do for them. I do it for Roscoe, my Yorkie who died of kidney failure in June. RIP little Roscoe! Momma loves you more than bugs!

I like the protein and carbs in NB for the most part for allergies but dog food is so complex that she could be reacing to who know what. Have you tried California Natural?

| She was on it for a while, the itching wasn't as bad as it is now but you could tell it still bothered her. I'm most likely going to switch her to Wellness Core Ocean and see if it helps.

| Someone mentioned Bendryl, which I do use for one of my schnauzers. The vet said if it made her sleep alot to discontinue it for awhile. I only give it to her when I have too. She also had to be put on K/D for awhile. Her last blood work came back normal and she even eats Welliness and Innovia now. I found an allergy drops you put in their water at the store where we buy their food and it also help alot. |
