| How do I get him to eat anything but the wet food? Hey all! I posted earlier about my baby, Alfie, not wanting to eat unless I was there with him. Well, last night I gave in and fed him some of the wet, canned food. He went to town on it and didn't really care where I was lol. The breeder fed him this twice daily, so now he's hooked. I don't want him to eat this for a variety of reasons, mostly pertaining to wanting to feed him the healthiest ingredients. I fed him a little less of the wet food today and put some water in it along with his eukanuba puppy. He didn't seem that into it, but as long as I was there he would eat some of it. Does anyone have any tips on perhaps the best way of weaning him off of it? Just a little more info....not sure if it matters but, I plan on weaning him off the eukanuba as well and onto something healthier. I'm contemplating raw, but also looking at a healthier dry food if I decide to not go raw. Thank you all! |

| Ohhh... This is gonna sound mean! My vet told me to starve my maltese off of canned food. Leave kibble out all the time. When they are hungry, they will eat it. Good Luck, it is hard to look into those little brown eyes and say no!

| If you're looking for a healthier dry food, there are several out there that people really like..Nature's Variety, Wellness, Life's Abundance, California Natural, Natural Balance, etc. I see nothing wrong with giving canned food along with the kibble as long as the canned is high quality and has good ingredients. Canned contains more moisture and is less processed than kibble.

| cali is free fed kibble during the day. sometimes she finishes it, sometimes not. for dinner, we "rotate" between kibble w/ fresh fruit or kibble w/ canned food- 1 tbs of fruit/can : 2 tbs of kibble. she also loves kibble in her kong. |

| Thanks to all for your replies! I am going to stick to scheduled feedings right now. He hates eating just his dry food. My friend told me to keep feeding him the dry stuff. He won't starve (I sure hope not), and he'll eat when he's hungry. I'm going to start weaning him over to another food asap. |

| Ever considered feeding raw? Not trying to push our way of life on you, but feeding raw is really good for your pet. It is all meat and loaded with nutrition. And there is an added bonus. The poo is sooooo small! My boys love it. If you are interested and would like to know more you can read here The Many Myths of Raw Feeding Won't hurt to check it out.

| Pookie- Thanks for your reply! I am definitely not ruling raw out. When I first got him, my first stop was at a pet store and they fed him a sample of raw food. He ate that patty up so fast! He was a happy little guy . I'm going to try weaning him over to a new food I got for him today. I gave him some in his normal food and he ate it pretty well. I will see how that goes, then I may try raw in the future. |

| What about feeding him a 'great' wet good and kibble? This way you are both happy! I give my dog wet food and kibble at every meal (in two seperate bowls). Is there a reason you don't want to feed him wet food? |

| The reason I don't want to feed him wet food is because of loose stools. I fed him wet food mixed with his kibble yesterday in the am and he was paying for it all day and this morning . Do all wet foods do this? |

| I was feeding him Purina Entrees. The breeder was feeding him that am and pm so you can imagine how used to it he became. I started weaning him to a new dry food, Merrick's BG (Before Grain). He picked through the Eukanuba kibble and went straight for the BG lol. I'm going to see how he adjusts to that. I'm just so happy he ate this morning! |

| My Jamie wouldn't have anything to do with several premium kibbles. I was literally begging him to eat it. We switched to raw and he loves it.

| I'm still considering raw. I just want to try the dry food for now and see if he starts to acquire the taste of his new food. He's such a finicky eater, that he now won't even eat his treats for when he goes potty lol (btw he found a consistent spot in the yard to go potty!). Once you switch to raw, you can't switch back can you? That's what someone told me. Not sure how valid that statement is though. |

| Of course you can switch back if you want to...There's absolutely no reason you couldn't switch back to kibble after feeding raw if it does not work out for you and your baby.

| I got a couple of raw patty samples at the pet store today. I gave Alfie 1 (is 1 too much? He's 2.5 pounds. The bag said for a 10 pound dog, 3 patties. If my math is right, should he be eating about 1.5 patties daily?) and he devoured it and was licking the bowl after he was done. He was loving it! I'm going to have to see what happens to his little bowels now. I know it may be tough on him at first from what I read. Could anyone tell me how their babies were the first few times after they were fed raw? I'm soooo happy my baby ate! Mama is relieved. |
