| I assume you bathe him in regular tub water correct? Well Paris has very hard water with a lot of minerals when I was living there if affected my own scalp which is not nearly as sensitive as a yorkies. Try buying a water softener for the tap and see if that helps. Also there are several great pet stores that would have oatmeal bath between La Samaritaine and Chatelet. On Sunday you may be able to find a breeder that can advise you at the pet marketalong the Seine, it is right on quai de la Megissierie near Pont Neuf on the Right Bank. I used to see a couple ladies there with Yorkies occassionally. GOOD LUCK!!!

| Also the other places that have quite a bit of pet stuff that is actually of high quality, because French do not really give their dogs low quality things, surprisingly are Monoprix and Tatti...Although it is so difficult to find anything at Tatti and who wants to go all the way to Barbes if it is not necessary!

| Thanks to all you kind yorkie lovers for your tips and help with Corky's problem and thanks Bruce's Mom on the tips for where to go in Paris and also about the hard water. It is terrible here isn't it! At the beginning we gave Corky two water bowls, one with tap water, one with Evian. He prefers the Evian and that is what we give him since then. We should get a water filter, it would be more economical. So to give you an update. Corky is doing a little better on his scratching and I can't help but wonder how much of it is psychological because he can spend hours and hours next to me while I am on the computer and not move an inch, but then I get up to do something else and there goes his rear leg. His fever still bothers me, and he definitely has a lot less energy than usual as he has been taking ultra short dog walks. Basically, he does his business and then turns around and heads for home. This is all within a half a block of our building. This afternoon at 16:00 I ground up 1/4 of one aspirin (thanks to your warning about Tylenol), mixed it with a small amount of water and gave it to him with a syringe. Within 45 minutes his temperature was normal. I am going to see how he does tomorrow and if there is no more improvement, I will take him to urgent care when I figure out where it is. He is still eating well, drinking well and his bowels are working fine so whatever he has, I think it is treatable. Thanks again all. |

| Thanks Bruce's Mom, We intend to go! Dear Bruce's Mom, How strange the world is. We live in the 8eme right now, but we just purchased a flat on, guess where, Rue du Cherche Midi, so I have to laugh. The vet you recommend is perfectly located! Corky is doing much better, but we definitely need to get him over to the doctor for a once over. His smell is a bit less, but still there, and his energy seems a little better, but he still asks to ride in his carry bag after around a 30 minute walk. The aspirin (I give him 1/8 of one aspirin) is working wonders on the fever. Thanks for your help. I hope we meet sometime. |

| It sounds very much as if Corky has a yeast infection. My maltese had it for years and it would ease off and then flare up again. It is most likely caused by an allergy to food. You could try restricting his diet down to just one type of pet food, no human food of any kind. There are medicated creams available for yeast infection but check with your vet before using any medicated products as you could just make matters worse. |

| Thanks for the reply. Did your maltese also have a smell during the flare ups? I read somewhere that if one suspects their dog has food allergies that I am supposed to bring him all the way down to just cottage cheese and rice for a few days and then slowly start integrating his usual foods in one by one and space them several days apart. He likes cottage cheese but has never liked rice much. I thought of quinoa which is high in protein and more nutty tasting. He is next to me and just ate some little Ceasar veal flavor and is licking his front paws. I read that that also can be a sign of food allergies. I don't know. The itching is less constant now, which is great, but the nights are the worst. We have had to move him out of our bedroom now which is really upsetting him and every night he barks for about 15-20 minutes before going to sleep. Before you say anything, I know. Little Ceasar is not good for him, but unfortunately the food that I had prepared for him and frozen into little patties in our freezer that he loves I had unfortunately mixed with onions, so the Little Ceasars is a last resort food for the moment. I haven't yet had time to buy the lamb and other ingredients to make his food and I wonder if I should if he is allergic to some other things in it. |

| I am glad corky is doing better! Sorry I could not tell you about a boarder there in Paris, but I never had to use one! What a coincidence it is about the vet, I am glad I could reccomend something in the right location! Please keep us up to date on how Corky is doing!

| yes the maltese smelled. Dairy products like cottage cheese could well be what he's allergic to. If he's used to lamb then I'd feed him plain boiled rice with a small amount of lamb and keep him on it for at least 2 weeks as his current irritation will have to clear up before you can start introducing anything else. |

| Hello to all. I found a very interesting web site with lots of information.... marvistavet.com It has various diseases symptoms and optional remedies listed. Update-Corky is smelling less, itching a little and his fever remains under control with the 1/8 aspirin every 8 hours. Even though Corky had skin scrapings done at the vet which came out negative, I have learned that often the scrapings for Sarcoptic mange can be negative but he can still have the mite. So they recommend treating the individual for the mange whether or not they test positive. His vet did not do this. This could explain why after all the shots (every day for a week) of antibiotics and antinflamatorys treated the symptoms and secondary infection, but did not rid him of his itching. I intend to go back to his medicated shampoo and also try tea tree shampoo as many years ago when his first owner obtained him from an abusive and neglectful household he was virtually hairless, but treatment with tea tree shampoo (she told me) corrected this and within a few months he had grown his marvelous long and luxurious Yorkie coat. He no longer has this long coat since after he spent two weeks in a kennel (Not my doing this happened just 1 week before we adopted him), he had ripped out with scratching and biting the ENTIRE right side of his coat on his body in addition to his tummy. The vet told me that he looked as though he had been dragged behind a car. To add insult to injury, the kennel never once contacted the emergency number of his then "mother" to inform her of his condition so he itched, bled, and suffered for the entire two weeks. Considering he was supposed to be getting twice daily dog walks, one wonders how they could have not seen this problem when he was actively bleeding. You know how there is a travel web site for hotels called Trip Advisor? I wonder if there is a web site where one can name and shame kennels such as this one in Solana Beach, California. If any of you know, please tell me. I thought of filing a small claims suit against them, but doing it from France just seemed very complicated. |

| Travel..... How's your puppy's eyes? Are they swollen, red or runny? Ringo is going through the same thing, but I have had him allergy tested. I am waiting on the results. I tried different foods and read a great article on yeast infections. He doesn't smell and I thought it would pass. I was reluctant to take him to a vet because I thought they'd just give him steroid shots, which doesn't fix the problem. It only suppresses the symptoms. I decided to take him to the vet. My vet suggested that he get allergy tested. They took a blood test and have sent it off to a lab. They told me that this test will tell us what he's allergic to. Then he will have 1 shot every 3 days for a month...then 1 a week and then 1 a month for the next year. This shot is a small dose of whatever he's allergic to. The lab whips up a serum of all the stuff he's allergic to in one shot. His immune system is supposed to build up a tolerance for whatever he's allergic to. The cost of the allergy test was $150. The shots for the year will be $150. That comes out to like $12 a month. It's worth it just to see what he's allergic to. The vet told me this will even tell us if he's allergic to food. Maybe you could have him tested? Good luck! I'll tell you how Ringo's problem works out. |

| Oh, and regarding the Sarcoptic mange. I placed Ringo on Revolution this past month. It kills that type of mange. It hasn't helped. Truthfully, after reading your post...it seems your pup could have a yeast infection. You may want to check for allergies though, just to rule that out. |
