Default Help in Choosing the RIGHT Food

I have been feeding my yorkie Eukanuba since he has been a puppy. (He is now 1 1/2 years old). I am currently giving him the adult Eukanuba and I am not sure if this is the best for him. I am looking for something that is natural and will be best for him. Any suggestions?

You are right, Eukanuba is not the best for him. YOu want to stay clear of any food that you can find at Walmart or PetSmart.... try foods such as Wellnes, Solid Gold, Merricks, Fromms, Canidae. You can go to their website and see what stores near you carry these foods.

i agree..We have really awesome dogie boutique in NYC that carries all the brands that Marci mentioned above. Eukanuba is fulled of fillers and other yucky stuff. My girls are on NV raw but once in a while they get kibbles and I give them Orijen six fish kibbles or Wellness Ocean Core kibbles.

I feed my Suzi an organic food. It is By Nature, and it is extremely healthy.

This is a good site but remember it is someone's opinions.

In searching for a food look at the 4 or 5 star foods. Most people feel the 6 stars are too high in protein for a yorkie

You are SO right about that!

It's a great place to start, but your research shouldn't start and end there. Here is another helpful site to try with links to info about commercial brands, raw diets and homecooking:

Dog Food Review Ratings

You may want to check out the sticky at the top of this section. It has contact info for some of the more recommended brands and many will send you coupons or even free samples. Also, the PetSmart near me actually carries some of the higher end brands of food. (Wellness and Blue Buffalo I know for sure.) It won't hurt to check and ask and who knows, if they get enough requests for it they may add it eventually.

Do some trial and error runs with various brands and combinations. Remember, what is best for one dog may not be the best for the next. You will know when you have found a good match by the results you see.

Rose Food for our yorkies

I feed my yorkie Royal Canine for Yorkies. It states that they make the food especially for yorkies. It is suppose to help with their teeth, hair, and skin. I think it's the best. I also give him salmon oil. I also give hime one boiled egg a week also for his hair. Petco sell dried salmon for dogs also. My Man loves it. The dried salmon can be grated over the food as well. If any of you have a problem with your yorkie eating, there is a dog food Made By Merricks(can food). It has real chicken thighs and wings with carrrots, blueberries, apples and all other sort of good natural foods. The brand is sold by Petland. Its not sold at Petco. You can also check out the web site Merrick Pet Foods if you like.

ThankYou. I went to the rating site and boy is it confusing. I also want the best for my furbabies.. but it didn't say what to feed to whom. (What is best for which breed) So I wasn't sure which star rating I needed to look for. Thank you ladies... What do you feed yours? How old are they?

I'm not a fan of breed specific food, most brands make a smaller bite nugget that is just like their food for bigger dogs.

I would recommend that you use this link and email or call some of these companies and ask for samples http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...e-samples.html

most of them are very generous - I even got samples for my cat. If you know you want kibble than let them know, but if you are open to both kibble and canned let them know

I like Innova and am currently feeding Before Grain Buffalo from Merrick - just to see if going grain free is for us, and I also have some raw patties in my fridge that I'm going to try.

I think about homecooking, but haven't really given that much a shot - but you can find lots of advice on that too here.

Many dogs have problems on Royal Canine since it contains corn and corn is a HUGE allergen for many dogs. I too am not a fan of breed specific food but i know many on here swear by it.

OK, question? (May be stupid.) Too high in protein for a yorkie. What side effects or causes from this. I feed Nolee Innova Evo 95% canned and small bites kibble. This is not good for him??

Sorry not meaning to hijack your thread Cappucino!

Great question. This is a myth. Unless your dog has liver issues there is no such thing as too high protien content. You WANT more protien in the food.. the lower the number means the less real "meat" and more fillers. Layla eats home cooked food and her meals are 90% protien and 10% veggies. Those who feed their dogs raw are 100% protien and do VERY VERY well on it.. Look for the food with the highest content of protien from human grade sources.

I feed Nature's Recipe and it doesn't have extra fillers or additives. I get the Easy to Digest formula since Chip has tummy problems sometimes. They love their food. You can get it at PetSmart of PetCo. Two things I look for in the ingredients is if it is nonspecific in what type of animal is in the food (ex. saying just animal fat). I want to know what type of animal is in my dogs food. If they don't know, then how am I supposed to feed it and feel safe about it. The other thing is byproducts. I won't feed them anything with byproducts in it.
