| visit to the vet yesterday I made an appointment for Lucie to have her frist vet visit, and Duke needed is rabies update and he also had something going on with his eyes that I noticed when we got home, so they both saw the vet yesterday. While my parents were watching Duke for the 3 months I was gone, he managed to get an eye infection, he gained 6lbs he now weighs 15lbs, something is wrong with his ear, and he was scratching terribly. He has a red rash on his belly, scratches in one ear, and he is losing hair on his rear end. Lucie is ok except for when I got her she had skin irritation on her belly, and he ears were totally dirty. The vet gave me saline to clean her ears out with, and said the skin irritation on her belly can be from her urine getting in her hair. Since that started clearing up since I picked her up from the breeder I don't need to treat it. For Duke, I have an ointment for his eyes, and the vet told me it seems as though he has bad allergies. She told me that the hair loss could be from an allergy to fleas, but he has no fleas...I have thoroughly checked him for fleas, and can't find anything. I bought a new shampoo to try today that has oatmeal and aloe vera in it. Is there anything else I could try?? The vet told me to get benedryl to control the itching, but I would rather not have him on meds constantly if there is something else I can do for him. I'm so mad that my parents couldn't follow my care instructions for him while I was gone...They didn't even cut his hair to keep it out of his eyes, which is how his eyes got infected...

| I'm wondering what you're feeding? Corn is big allergen for dogs, and can have a variety of ways it shows up. Is he overweight - or is he just bigger? If he is overweight what are you doing to get his weight under control? The shampoo sounds like a good start. You could use it several times a week to help him. There are also products that can be used after shampoo or just when they are wet to help with the itchiness - they aren't conditioners, but look similar Hylyt EFA Creme Rinse 8 oz 15415 Kennel Vet VetRxDirect - Relief® Creme Rinse TropiClean Oxy-Med Medicated Oatmeal Rinse at PETCO I think some of these come in spray form also

I feed him Eukaneuba, since I have been here on YT I learned about different foods and asked the vet yesterday about changing to canidae, and all she told me was that if they aren't having any problems with their food there is no reason to change it..It kind of irritated me cuz she acted like I was wierd or something for asking about changing his diet, and I even told her it was becuase he has problems with itching and watery eyes... My mom said that she went through 3 bags of food over the 3month period, normally 1 bag of food lasts me at least 3 months. So I am guessing his weight gain was from them over feeding him. So no I have him back on his normal food portions.

| well vets do not have much training in the area of diet and nutrition so that may be one reason, and also, if you are buying the food at your vet, changing food will take money out of the vet's pocket. You need to do what is best for your dog. You've started to educate yourself - that is so important. Try some new foods and find one he likes. You can even write a lot of the companies and they will send you samples. There is a sticky thread at the top of this Health & Diet forum with all the email addresses - I wrote them and told them about my dogs and my cat and they were all very generous in their samples. That way you can find what your boy likes best. Although if he has been eating Eukaenba he will probably think everything tastes better -- dogs do know quality. Good luck getting the skin cleared up. I would also stay on top of keeping his bedding clean. We had problems with skin too this year and my holistic vet gave us this shampoo - it is wonderful Photoclens by Ayuvet from Tomer Labs - you can buy it directly from them natural herbal treatment - tomer laboratories - natural quality herbal remedies -- this shampoo is wonderful - the dogs smell wonderful & their coats are beautifu. Here is what I found about the ingredients oils of Himalayan cedarwood Cedarwood Himalayan Essential Oil, Cedarus Deodora Eucalyptus leaf oil Eucalyptus Essential Oil, Eucalyptus globulus Also, Eucalyptus is suppose to deter fleas

If they sell Canidae that doesn't make sense. Anyway, when you switch foods make sure you keep him on it for at least 60-90 days because it would take that long for his body to recover from the old food and allergy symptoms to go away if the body is the problem.
