| Can I have your opinions?? I would like you opinions...... We just got Mimi 6 days ago. She is 13 months and 6.70 lbs. I took her today for her first check up with my vet. She needs to be spayed and also have her teeth cleaned. My vet WON'T do the spaying and the teeth cleaning at the same time. They said that they won't clean teeth when they have an open cavity/area due to all the "bacteria" from the teeth! I can see both sides....but I don't want her going under twice! Can I please get you opinions/advice?? I am torn.

| He makes a valid point. Do her teeth have a lot of issues? I would have a tough time with that decision as well. I'm curious what others have to say.

| Our vet always does them together. I'm not positive, but I think the surgery is first, and then assuming everything went okay, they do the teeth. I'd be concerned about putting her under twice in a short time. Good luck.

| I don't have any advice, but want to wish you good luck with your decision. I saw Mimi's pic on one of your other threads, and she is a sweetie! |

| While it is good that your vet is being cautious, there are so many Yorkies every year that have both done at the same time. Usually they just get baby teeth pulled at the same time. Ellie had her teeth cleaned at the time of her spay and all went well. Could your vet give antibiotics before? Would that make him/her feel better about it? Once the incision is closed they could just drape it if they are that concerned. No teeth cleaning should be going on if there is an open cavity but there shouldn't be one when they close it... If it is oozing and still "open", wouldn't a drape take care of that? I would have a hard time agreeing to put Ellie under twice for something that most vets will do in one surgery. There is no reason to put her through anesthesia for no reason. By the way, Ellie didn't get an infection and she didn't go on any antibiotics at all. Just my opinion.

| Moosie's Mom, Have you considered giving her a raw soup bone to chew on to clean her teeth? It works wonders on our guys, and they LOVE it! Make sure it's raw, not cooked. | When Wrigley was spayed, they extracted some teeth at the same time. We didn't want to put her under twice and she did great!

Donating YT Addict | I agree with Crystal. They should be able to do the spay then close up, drape with a sterile cloth and then do the teeth with a shot of antibiotic at the end to boot. If there are serious dental issues they may want her to have a course of antibiotics before they do the spay/teeth cleaning. I would not put my Baby under twice.
