| Cooked Oatmeal or Uncooked Oatmeal Hi All - ZheZhe's hasn't been feeling the greatest for a several weeks now, and has been having a bout with diarreah with bloody spots in it. The Vet has given her meds, so for a couple of days it gets better then it's back again. She has lost a few pounds (11 lbs. to 9 lbs.) which the Vet wanted her under 10 lbs., I'm just not crazy on her losing it that way. Anyway, now she is not eating like she should be (Natural Balance Duck and Potatoe). So I was wondering has anyone ever fed their pooches Oatmeal and how did you prepare it for them to eat it. Do you think it would help with her watery poop in giving her some fiber ? Any suggestions would be most appreciated. Thanks pwolfkill |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | What is the diagnosis? What meds? Poor baby. Why the oatmeal - are you trying to use that to firm her up or ? Did they test the stool and do blood work? Not sure what to recommend without a little more info.

| The Vet has done 2 stool samples and both have came back negative for parasites. He said he may be IBS. One week he put her on Flagyl, it didn't have any effect. Then he put her on Propectalin, that helped some, then when we were finished with that, it came back again in full force. This last 7 days we were on a type of cortisone. Still no luck, so he wants to try her on the Propectalin again. So, we're going to do that. The Vet said that it's not unusual for it to run it's course. But now she's loosing interest in her food. I thought that maybe Oatmeal may help with the runny stools and put a little substance in her stomach. What do you think ? |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Oh boy, the IBS umbrella diagnosis. Frustrating. Often, IBS is diagnosed when no real cause can be uncovered - so, it's really often not a true diagnosis of anything. You could go a couple of ways - do you want to homecook? If yes, I'd recommend the whitefish, potatoes, greens diet. If no, I'm wondering if you'd be interested in starting Raw - perhaps first with a bag of Freeze Dried Raw Venison - then progressing to Raw Frozen. Also, I think you should probably use a probiotic for about 3 - 6 mths no matter which way you go. If you go w/ homecooking, I'd recommend adding a digestive enzyme (not needed w/ raw). I mean, you could try another kibble....but I just think you're likely to run into the same issues you already have.

| Well, we tried the Oatmeal, cooked and uncooked. It seem to have helped a whole lot. You can definitely see a difference. We cooked alittle with honey added and she gobbled it up. Then we put alittle in her blueberry yorgart for her breakfast and she devoured it. For dinner at night she ate her regular Duck and Potatoe and did fine. I think I'm going to keep her on this regime for 3-4 days and see what the results are from that. At least until her Vet comes back from vacation, and let him look at her again. Thanks for all of your advice. pwolfkill |

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Quote:
Some of the fruit yogurts contain too much sugar or worse artificial sweeteners, which can be deadly to dogs. Make sure the yogurt you use has "live or active culture" some doesn't, it should say so on the packaging. Avoid yogurt that says "heat treated after culturing" on the label. This means that after the bacteria was added in yogurt, it was pasteurized - a process which can destroy live cultures. I personally don't believe you need to add honey to the oatmeal in order for her to gobble it up. Sweeteners are not necessary and can be harmful.
