| I just took Archie to the vet after he started pooping blood. She couldn't get another stool sample because he hasn't gone to the bathroom at all. We're not sure if it's an obstruction (he ate a chicken bone the other day) or if it's a parasitic infection. He's been itching his feet a lot. I believe he was already vaccinated for giardia but it's one of those things where they can still get it even if they are vaccinated. The thing is that Archie has been in a pond so it could be from that. Anyway, she gave him Flagyl and told me to feed him only boiled chicken and rice. He hasn't gone to the bathroom yet, though, but he's drinking water and playing like nothing is wrong with him. You have to be really careful. We pretty much let archie do whatever he wants, so from now on...no going in water, going near other dog's poo, and strict sidewalk walks. |

| Giardia is a very nasty one celled cirtter that causes diarrhea. I wasn't aware of any vaccination that was given for it, but then again I am not a vet. I do know that one of the sources is raccoon poop. On a wilderness hiking trip to Colorado where we got our drinking/cooking water from the streams, the guides were adamant about properly treating the water..... Giardia on a wilderness camping trip where the potty is a shovel and a hole is NOT fun!. GOOD LUCK! |

| Rio has been sick once in his life, he drank from a creek during a walk and got giardia. He was put on meds and was back to normal within 2 days. It is nasty with the pooping but easily taken care of. |

| I have had experience on humans with giardia and Flagyl(brand name) generic name (metronidazole) has been the drug of choice indicated for that condition, the amount depends on weight. Now, with animals I have never had that experience but alot of the same meds used with humans are also used with animals but in pediatric doses. It is a parasite and its cureable when treated and does cause alot of diarrhea and itching in the rectum area.
