I thought Yorkies don't shed??

Hi!! My yorkie is shedding now. I felt OK about it after reading this thread until I realized there is a significant age difference between the babies described here and my little Mandy.

Most of the dogs on this thread are 4-6 months old. Mandy is 21 months. She didn't shed any noticeable amount back when she was 4-6 months. She started about 2 months ago and it's everywhere - but no, she's not balding.

Should I be alarmed or is she just a late bloomer?

Is your Yorkie a mix? Could she have some systemic problem causing the unusual hair loss? I have had 3 Yorkies over the years and non of them shed coat. They lost dead hair as people do but did not officially shed. Unless your baby is a mix that might be shedding due to other breed coat tendencies, she should not be losing a lot of hair. I almost never find any of Tibbe's hair, even at bathtime. I do find some hair in his brush but only a little daily. Might get her checked by the vet just to be sure she has no worms or something. she is purebred. So nothing to think about there.

She had some health issues about a month ago and a full battery of tests were run. She was vomiting and throwing up several times a day. All tests came back negative, including parasites. They gave her an IV due to dehydration, put her on antibiotics, a very strict diet (boiled chicken mixed with a tiny bit of kibble) and Pepcid AC (1/4 of a pill) and that seemed to clear it up. She remained on this for 2 weeks. As soon as we took the boiled chicken away she went right back to being sick. We put her back on the diet, no more Pepcid and no antibiotics and she seems well, except for looking the hair.

I guess I'll take her back to the vet. The hair loss very well may be a connection.

I've also had Yorkies before and never had a shedding problem. So I knew this was not OK.

I've had yorkies before and never knew this either. But, that is exactly what ZoE is doing. I just thought that their hair changed colour at some point as it grew out. But ZoE is actually losing her puppy hair and new hair is coming in. I've included a closeup pic below that shows she's losing her old black hair on her head, and new tan growth is coming in...it's now about 1/4" long. She's also lost alot of black on her ears and it's been replaced by tan.

I never noticed it (love is blind) but my daughter had hair all over her shirt after holding Jazi (18 wks old). Glad to know its temporary...she has allergies.

I just wanted to point out that if she has been under extreme stress (as she naturally would have to be when sick as you've described) then she would lose more hair because of that. But you should also try to make sure that you are giving her all that her body requires nutritionally... Because just plain chicken by itself is not an adequate source of the nutrients, vitamins and minerals that she needs. You may want to consider adding some fruits and veggies, as well as a multivitamin to the chicken.

I wouldn't use a slicker brush on the coat except for getting the knots out, and don't let it touch the skin.
I'd also strongly suggest using a very mild hand made doggie soap. When you read all the ingredients in a dog shampoo it makes you wonder what your actually putting into their blood supply. Also the doggie soap has natural ingredients that repel fleas.

Yorkiedaze, never heard of a handmade doggie soap. What is the name of it and where do you get it? Thanks so much.

Good info I was wondering the same thing as my yorkie sheds a little right now...he is a year old now. Just surprised as we thought they didn't shed....now I know when he has his adult coat he won't shed. About what age do they get their adult coat?

I use a plastic human's comb on her hair since it seems to work best and she hated the slicker brush. She is 15 wks.

I know this is an old post, but did your puppy stop shedding. If so, when? I’m dealing with th me same situation and he is 10 months old. He has no skin issues and no itching. It has been a problem since he was 3 months old.
