I appreciate what you said about this being a paperwork/permit issue. They have always been a highly reputable company, and I would be truly upset if they were one of "those" producing tainted food. That being said, do you think I should have the canned food tested?? I still have one unopened can - or do you think this would be overkill? Thanks for the reassuring info! Lauren

I chalked it up to being stale since I bought a HUGE bag. I stopped giving that to her and got Innova dry, and she's done well on that (I free feed). But in the evening is when she gets 1/3 can of Evangers. I give her the drummets or the duck & sweet potato. Please God don't let anything be wrong with that.

I used to feed my girls the Artemis Fresh Mix Small Breed Adult, they did fine, except they gained too much weight on it, on just a tiny amount. I did order it in 4# bags to keep it fresh though, because I have been told, that once a food has been opened 30 days, it loses a lot of its vitamins & minerals. I changed to Evanger's canned awhile back, think we've gone through at least 6 cases, no problems. Sheila

| Evanger's is still the safest and best in quality dog and cat food on the market. Trust me i have done my extensive research. If you do not believe me call the company and find out for yourself. Here is a link from Evanger's in regards to the FDA, which rumor has it is greatly exaggerated, which I believe. Evanger's Dog and Cat Food Company |

I have found some pretty scary readings there relating to Evanger's, in the past few days.

"All ingredients in Evanger’s products are sourced in the United States and all manufacturing is done in its suburban Chicago facility. The routine FDA inspection was related only to Evanger’s canned foods and is not affiliated with of production its dry pet food products." That's the part that still concerns me. I was feeding canned, only. Hubby says no more until they make a statement about it in particular. What are you reading about it on Itchmo? Sheila

Sorry, I am just now checking in and catching up. Here is a link to one of the forums on Itchmo. I found Page 3 to be the most current and important: April 24, 08 Evanger's FDA Orders Food Maker to Obtain Emerg. Operating Permit page 3 I did read another report of slight concern relating to elevated copper levels: "February 25, 2008: Test results are back on samples received in ziplock bags, believed to be Evangers pheasant and brown rice, best by Oct. 17, 2009, code #001. Tests ordered: Solanine tested negative. Aflatoxin and copper. Aflatoxin tested negative. Copper levels were approximately twice the recommended level for dogs. Copper is a necessary element, but excess levels may cause health problems in some breeds. " This can be found near the top of the page here: Pet Food Products Safety Alliance All my information is from Itchmo, which I regard as a highly reputable source. Then I also found this alarming article" FDA Orders Illinois Pet Food Maker to Clean Up Its Act Risk of botulism in Evanger's dog, cat food Part of the article reads: "The FDA said the problems could result in under-processed pet foods, which can allow the survival and growth of Clostridium botulinum (C. botulinum), a bacterium that causes botulism in some animals as well as in humans." The above can be found here: FDA Orders Illinois Pet Food Maker to Clean Up Its Act Sorry again to post this so late in the day, but I just found this further info today, and thought it was important. | Hi, Lauren. It appears we are in the same boat. I had my girls on Evangers, then when the problems occurred with the canned food, I went back to NV raw medallions, only to have Kia cut her tiny mouth on a bone fragment and have a bout of vomiting and mucousy stool. I am back to home-cooking. But, like you, I would really like to get back on raw, because I feel it does have so many benefits. I think, our safest bet may be doing the raw diet with fresh food, so that if a problem arises, we aren't left guessing what was in the food. I had been home-cooking for quite a long time, then a spine disease landed me in bed for a year and a half, and I've only been back on my feet since the end of November. And even at that, not 100%. I'm feeling rather disheartened with the pet food industry. ![]() Sheila |

I cannot even begin to imagine what you have been through with your own health issues - a year plus confined to your bed!!! I do hope you are getting around now, fully mobile! You are not the only one feeling down on even the supposedly "higher grade" pet food manufacturers. From what I can understand about Evanger's, is that after the dreadful recall in March '07, their facility was expanded hugely due to increased demand, so I imagine many quality control issues fell through the cracks. I had heard such great things about NV, so I was upset to see what happened with your Kia. Hope she is doing better now with her new diet. Lauren

Lauren, I developed a spine disease, ad until a spine specialist determined that it was affecting the nerves, my D.O. couldn't find a medication to ease the pain. I'm grateful that I was sent to one of the top neurology clinics in the country, and the disease is manageable. So many with the disease are in worse shape, their spines are completely fused. Thanks, I am getting around better now, my activities are limited, not something I ever expected at age 55. I work hard at my PT, because I have 1 year old twin grandsons that I plan to enjoy! That is such a shame that Evangers quality control declined due to their expansion. My girls loved their food. I'm disappointed about the NV, too, because it was such a convenient way to feed raw.
