I haven't researched the best product for our Yorkie though. She's only about 3 lbs at 5 months. I've noticed that most of the pkgs I saw were for 4 lbs and up. It sounds like Frontline is recommended on this site. We'll have to check with our vet at the next appt. | |

| I share this same opinion. I fear the long term effects of these meds as well. Does anyone know of any alternatives to heartworm preventions, flea preventions that are less toxic? Quote:

| A friend of mine that rescues Aussies sent this to me... I wonder if it would be good for our yorkies?? Anyone using this?? I haven't used a chemical flea/trick product on any of my dogs (including my fosters) for well over a year now. The answer? GARLIC!!!! I buy mine from Springtime Inc. About $14 plus shipping and it lasts for at least two months (that's 4 (yes, FOUR) 50-lb dogs getting a teaspoon a day). If you buy their "buy two get one free" offer, you get three jars for 29.00 plus shipping. Plain and simple I don't have fleas and when my last two fosters came in literally covered in ticks. They started falling off w/in a day of my adding garlic to their food. I feed them the recommended dosage. Oh, and I don't spray my yard w/ any flea products either. Springtime's website is: Springtime Inc., All Natural Supplements for Horses, Dogs, and People, Chondroitin sulfate, Glucosamine HCL, MSM, Vitamin C, Bioflavonoids, Biotin, Kelp, Dog Chewables, Minerals, Remedies, Herbal supplements, daily nutrients, joint health, anti-infla The garlic is called "Bug-off Garlic" But is nothing more than dried and granulated high quality (even surpasses the stuff in the grocery store) garlic. I have used it in my cooking when I've run out of the fresh stuff. I didn't like the thought of applying something to my dog that you had to treat like toxic waste. If it's that toxic, I don't want any part of it.

Garlic, especially in large amounts, is very dangerous for dogs. It can cause anemia and asthmatic attacks. I don't think it is a good idea to give it at all but never would I give that much. So it wouldn't be good for Yorkies. I don't use flea/tick preventatives anymore because they just aren't necessary for Ellie. Lyme's disease is not a big threat here. I do use heartworm preventative and strongly encourage everyone to use it.

| Thanks for the info. My vet recently stopped carrying Frontline for some reason. So I had to get Advantage. I was thinking of getting the Promeris next time and I'm so glad I saw the info you provided. Once I read it I called my vet and informed them of the problems. I think I'm going to try Advantix. Doesn't that take care of heartworms? Chunk's mom, A righeous man regards the life of his animal.... Proverbs 12:10 |
