| How often are female heats? I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this but I'm a little confused. I'll be adopting a 4 year old female in a month. She has not been spayed. By the time Maggie gets here, Franklin will be neutered so I'm not worried about accidents, but I won't be able to get Maggie spayed for about a couple of months (I need time to replenish my funds ). What do I need to know about female heats? I've never had a female dog before so I am completely lost. Is it likely that she'll go into heat before I get her spayed? what do I need to do while she's in heat?

| Females go into heat about every 4-7 months (some only yearly). They are in heat for usually about 3 weeks. She will need a diaper if you are worried about staining. If a female goes into heat, finishes the heat cycle and starts to show discharge before it is time for her to go into heat again, it could be pyometra and this is a medical emergency. This usually happens about 6-8 weeks after a heat.

| This may sound stupid, but how will I know she's in heat? Besides the discharge, will there be any visible, obvious signs? Like behavior changes.. etc..

| Sometimes she will be clingy and sad and her vulva should be swollen.
