Oh, I get it. The TV news report you saw was probably talking about the heat wave in the Midwest. The link posted by ldstull says avoid ice water when trying to cool your dog down from heat stroke. If your dog doesn't have heat stroke, I don't think a little ice water is going to hurt.

Thanks for clarifying that because to me that makes sense...
Living in AZ with 117 degree temps the dogs enjoy having
cool water.
