Hello Odies_Mama

- if you look at the ingredients above - a HUGE (huge!) red flag alone should be the MENADIONE (vitamin K3 derivative) - any food that ever has that in it....steer clear entirely, bc that should tell you (entirely) that the manufacturer just doesn't give a hoot, period. Besides that, the main meat source is a "meal", there is "gluten", beet pulp, and soybean - all of which could be allergens. So, your pup's problems could be food related. Also, check out FL here (http://www.pollen.com/home.asp), pollen is off the scale - so it could also be seasonal (or both).

My Marcel is having seasonal stuff w/ pollen this year too - so I've been using some homeopathic stuff and it's been helping - I've been using Proaller (drops) and Notatum (drops). I'm sure there are similar homeopathic rememdies you could get at maybe a Whole Foods or something? But, either way, I'd switch foods it it were me.

is it possible that its A.D.D itchyness? lol and i know that sounds funny, but i have now noticed that he only scratches when he's bored and just laying around. as long as his attention is focused on playing, or lounging outside watchin cars go by or even sleeping and eating, he's absolutely fine.

odie-man is one crazy pup and it wouldnt surprise me if it was something as silly as that!

Well, since his food contains allergens and since pollen is currently sky-high in your area right now....then, no...that wouldn't be my first thought.

Hi, I'm in Pensacola!
My Harley has just started scratching this past week. I think its the pollen. You can try the Grizzly salmon oil in his food, that stuff makes a world of difference for the dry skin.

Where do you get that? Is that something you can just use anyway?

Just google it. I ordered mine from Amazon. I think its a quart size and it is lasting forever!

yea i'll try that! so you're in pensacola, thats awesome! maybe we could have a meet up and let out babies have a play date? i got my odie-man from a family in Pensacola, but they're off the Pine Forrest exit so we only see them when we go to my fiance's dad's. =/

How do vets test for allergies?

Vets can take a blood sample and send it off there are two types of test which can be ran on this sample either RAST or ELISA, some feel the ELISA gives more accutate results.

There is a intradermal skin test which usually has t be done at a veterinary dermatologist. In this test, a small amount of antigen is injected into the skin of the animal and after a short period of time, the area around the injection site is observed to determine if the animal is allergic to the agent.

Myfurbaby had the same problem when I got him he had really dry flaky skin and would constantly scratch to the point of whining. so I asked the vet and they gave me this shampoo called "VIRBAC" episoothe and also suggested a fish oil. I ended up buying salmon oil at petco because it was more affordable than at the vet.I would just put a drop on a cheerio and gave it to him once a day. But ever since then he has had a beautiful coat and no itching.

If your baby's fur is really short, maybe try to put a thin material clothing on. If it is because of the environment, a tee/cotton shirt might help as you are protecting their skin from the environment.

Mine gets itchy after going out, its grass I think that he itches from and he cannot eat oat, it also makes him itch.

I have used oatmeal shampoo on him and it works because it doesn't dry out the skin so much. I also have a bottle of Burgham Senior shampoo for senior dogs but this shampoo is good. It is milder on his skin than the normal shampoos. I also use Emu Oil spray-the brand that I am using is Kalaya. I spray it on him after bath and whenever I need to. It does help keeping his skin moisturized, fur soft and I think it helps to keep bugs away to a certain extent.

Edit: I do feed him boiled salmon or share my salmon sashimi with him at least once a week. I think it helps.

My Baxter always looked like he scratched too much, I have another dog, Izzy and she does not scratch half as much as Baxter! I told the vet, and he looked at his coat and said he was fine. I know that this is not fine, he is now scratching so much he is breaking the skin and causing scabs!

I have itchy skin, and need to apply oil to stop the itch. I could not bear to see him scratch any longer so I just put some olive oil formulated for hair and scalp on him (boy does he look greasy!). I'll watch and see if that helps. I am making another appt for the vet and on my way to the pet store to look for something different than what he is eating now (Eukanuba) and some new shampoo!

My izzy has a bit of an itcy problem too. She'd been scratching at her ears like crazy... Mostly at night or randomly. And she would scratch and scratch so bad. I asked the vet about it before when I took her in but they didnt say anything. So I was on here tuesday and saw that someone suggested wiping the dogs ears with alchohol and putting a little oil in their ears just incase its mites.
I smelled her ears but they didnt smell like she had an infection so I wiped them with the alchohol using a q-tip (which she hates I think because its cold) and then I used a little sweet oil and dabbed some in her ear with a q-tip and a cotton ball. It seemed to have soothed her itchies for a bit because I havent heard her scratching since. Ive only done it twice so Im thinking of doing it for the rest of the week. Hopefully it cures her itching.
