| Canned food question I mix in a little canned food into Kramer's dry food, he eats better that way, he loves the canned, but if i give him too much he gets loose stools, so i just give him a tablespoon of canned. Usually one can lasts me a week, today i was looking at the can and it says use within 3 days, can this be true, i have had it in the fridge for a week each time. Will this make him sick? Another question is, will it make him sick if i change up the brand of canned food, or even same brand but different flavor? Silly questions i know, but this is my first small dog and i'm not used to his sensitive stomach, he seems to get diarrhea or vomit over any little thing, so i just want to make sure. |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | They're not silly, they're smart! If he gets loose stools that easily, it makes me think that maybe you just haven't found the right one for him yet. What are you feeding and have you checked out the ingredients? If there are too many ingredients, I have some other ideas for you for "top dressing". As for switching, I'm a big fan of switching and variety - but you'll have to see what works for your baby. You could first find (1) right food, then try switching within the brand and so on. About the freshness - does it come in the smaller cans? If not, I wonder if after you open the can - maybe put 1/2 can into the freezer in tupperware, then defrost later. That might be worth a try.

| I was wondering the very same question! How long is too long to keep a can of dogfood in the fridge? I just found Eagle Pack and Diesel hasn't gotten the runs yet from it!!! So how long is too long???

| I would only keep it for three days and then try what Ann said....freeze the rest.

| I agree that canned food should be used up within 3 days. Also, switching between brands and flavor will cause loose or soft stools. There are only two canned foods I feed my dogs and that is Pedigree Lamb and Rice Puppy and Pedigree Traditional Ground Chicken and Rice (sold at PetSmart). I just mix a little into the dry food. There are other brands that are good but they are more costly and harder to find. I especially don't like the canned foods with sause in them (too messy). There are also some good alternatives to canned food and that is to add a little homemade mixture with steamed vegetables and sweet potatoes. |

| I feed him life's abundance dry food and wellness canned food, but this week i tried Canidae, i'm still in the trial stage to see what he likes and what agrees with him. I hadn't thought about freezing it, that is a good idea. And also i wonder if he was getting diarrhea not from the type of food, but maybe because it was old, now i feel bad, i should have read the cans. I have a cubbard full of all kinds of dog foods. |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Could be - so check out the freshness thing and see if it improves. Otherwise, Wellness has this stuff that is basically the canned meat (not all the veg and other stuff) which you could use to top dress/mix in the meat to make it tasty. Again, like 1T would be enough, probably.

| canned food question Tricksie has to have wet with dry or she will not eat. I have had her on Pedigree wet but didn't think it was healthy so I only put one teaspoon of Innova with her regular food two days ago and she has had the poops, Bad, vomited this morning and has not eaten all day. She seems full of energy. Think I will keep her on the Pedigree.
