| Since I'm a new puppy owner, I'd love to know a little more what titers are. |

| Do you know what your vets reasoning is for vaccinating even though the titers are good?

Traditionally, pets have been given yearly vaccines. Overally, it's the cheapest and easiest way to do things for the owner and vet. However, vaccine/immunity studies are being done, and it is proven that most vaccines last much longer than a year - some may last the lifetime of the dog. So why keep vaccinating if your dog is protected? We just don't know yet how long each vaccine really lasts (and it varies from dog to dog)...so that's why regular vaccines are still given (usually three years apart now instead of every year...although many vets still do yearly vaccines). There is a lot of info out though about the dangers of overvaccinating so many vets and owners are starting to lean more toward having titers done before vaccinating.

| Is this something new? When I ask the receptionist @ our vet she just looked at me like and said they don't do that.

Next time you have a chance to talk to your vet, ask him about it. It's probably not something he normally does but he should be aware of it.

| LOL Look above - post 19. I guess "titer" is a strange word (especially if you pronounce it wrong ) "Tight - er" (not "tit-er) LOL

| She has legal backing (because AAHA recommends every three years) if something were to go wrong.

Bella Boo & Diggy Too! Donating GS Member | Well I would not listen to the receptionist at all...mine said huh too, then said are you sure??? Its so expensive....Amazes me how much these receptionists think they know! The vet she works for is the one who SUGGESTED it and first brought it to light for me. She has been there forever and my vet is a younger guy (prolly 30-35) who graduated from Michigan State and is a very agressive vet, always willing to try the news things and isnt stuck in that old school funk AT ALL!

| Yes, definately if you even vaccinate at all... With her liver doing what it is doing, I would be VERY hesitant. The only ones I would even consider are rabies and DHPP.
