For loose stools and constipation, plain canned pumpkin works great. I mix it with a little Karo syrup and the dogs love it. Do you know if they checked her stool for coccidia? If the loose stools continue then I would take her back for another check, sometimes coccidia is hard to find in the stool.

I guess I spoke to soon, because as soon as posted I went in to check her and she had bright blood in her stool again. I saw no mucous, and her stool seemed not as loose (soft), but still not right. I called the vet to ask if she was tested for coccidia and I am waiting for a phone call back from them. I know yesterday the vet did say that she had to come back in 2-weeks to be retested for something because sometimes it does not show up in the puppies stool. Does coccidia cause diarrhea, and blood/mucous? Is it fatal? Can it be cured? Thank you

Coccidia is a common bacteria that many puppies get and yes, if left untreated the puppy can die. The symptoms are mucous diarrhea. The blood could be from her intestinal lining being irritated from either food or medicines. Let's see what the vet says. She might need a little more time for the meds to work. Keep us posted.

:( Sorry that she is still not feeling better. Coccidia is what my puppy came to us with and had all of what you are saying. However, change in diet can also cause these syptoms. I hope you hear from the vet soon. I would think that if they had tested for it, they would have given you the results already. You could take in another sample just to cover all bases.

I used to work for a vet and he didn't even give the lepto....due to the risks associated with it...
He gave a DPC(Distemper, Parvo, Carona) Combo And Bordatella

I would ask before assuming it was given.......I don't know a vet that uses it period!

The vet called back and I asked him if he tested her for coccidia, and he said, "have you been on the internet again". I said yes, I have been on yorkietalk.com and they asked me if she was tested for coccidia. He said he did test her, and it was neg, but if she still has blood in her stool to bring her back in a couple of days for a retest. I must have misunderstood him about her coming back to him in two weeks, as he said she has to get more shots in two weeks. He still insists that she had a hypoglycemia attack yesterday. I guess I will have to believe what he is telling me. Also, once I told him that she still had bright red blood in her stool and still was soft, he wants me to feed her hamburger and rice. Does this sound correct? Thanks

This is what the OP said was on her vet statement for shots given and the vet did confirm that the lepto was given:
BORDETELLA, DHLP/PARVO/CORONA

DHLP is Distemper, Hepatisis, Leptospirosis, Parainfluenza

For some reason many vets in our area give the lepto shot to all puppies, regardless of size. Personally, I think it is unethical. Can you imagine a tiny 1 lb 6 oz puppy getting that many shots at one time. No wonder she had a severe reaction.

OMG Lord no!! not with already having all the issues she's having, there's no way in this world I'd give her hamburg, regardless if she was sick or not. Boiled chicken, yes, hamburger, no way. Hamburg is WAY to fatty and will cause her more troubles. I wouldn't let them give her anymore shots either with her still having issues. When we got Maggy May, she had ear mites, yeast infection in both ears, round worms and tape worms. Our vet WOULD NOT give ANY shots AT ALL until she was cleared up of EVERYTHING and her immune system had time to recover. I don't understand why your vet gave her shots when she was already having issues with her stool. I'm keeping your baby in my thoughts and prayers and hope she makes a complete recovery very soon.

There is not way I would give her hamburger meat. It would really tear up her stomach. If she were mine I would give her a 1/2 teaspoon the canned pumpkin with a little karo twice a day and keep her on the same diet she is used to as long as her stool is getting firmer. If you do want to try some home cooked food then just take some ground turkey, simmer it in a small amount of water until cooked and then add some cooked brown rice to that. I just hate messing to much with their diet when they are sick....sometimes it makes them sicker. What kind of canned food did you feed her? The next thing I would do is find a new vet that understands the dangers of giving too many vaccinations to tiny puppies.

Hamburger???? I have ever heard of giving this when their tummies are upset. My vet said that if we could not get our baby feeling better and she would not eat her food, then try boiled chicken and rice.

I hope she gets better very soon!

Also, he sounds like he is discounting what we are telling you. All of the advice that I am giving to you came straight from my vet....and it matches what other vets have also said. I just want to help because I know how stressful it is to have a sick puppy.

I think I am going to switch vets, because he wants me to bring her back in 2weeks for more shots. Sorry, but I am not going to put me or her through that again. I will find someone who understands the yorkie breed and me at the same time. And chicken does sound like a better choice than hambuger. Red meat is so hard to digest in humans let alone a small puppy. Thank you!

I will try the pumpkin. I had a can of Cesar Canine Cuisine, how bad is that? I am learning here. :) Is it ok to feed her that? I only put a little in this morning with her dry food and fed her a little more just now mixed with dry food. She is loving it, which is making me happy as could be! If there is another canned food that is better please let me know. Turkey, chicken and brown rice do seem like a better, healthier choice for a sick tummy. Thank you

No, the vet said, bring her back in a few days if the blood in the stool continues. He wants to see her in 2-weeks for more shots.

I am quoting myself. :) I said this in an earlier post. I misunderstood the vet regarding bringing her back in two weeks. He wants to see her back in two weeks for more shots not a fecal test or retest. If the blood in the stool continues, he wants to see her in a few days. Thank you
