| Flaky skin and scabs? Hi all, I will be taking Wid to the vet for this, but I thought I'd post to see what you all have had experience with. Widdles has very, very dry skin. On his lower back, right before his tail, he has clusters of large dry flakes and several scabs. I never see him picking at himself, unless he does it at night when we're sleeping. He has no fleas, and isn't exposed to anything that is knowingly irritating. He's not overweight, nor underweight, so I'm not leaning toward thyroid. His haircoat is normaly on the oily side. He tends to get stringy within a day or two of bathing. My vet had told me when he was just four/five months old or so that he appeared to be an 'allergy' dog. That he may have issues with grass and outdoor pollens. His eyes were watery then, that was back in September. I do have a gas fireplace that's on a few times during the day. We have forced hot water baseboard heat. I add olive oil to his diet, and just recently started homecooking for the crew. What do you think? Thanks, Joy

| well the switch to homecooking should prove effective... but of course you have to give it a bit... take him off all chicken... i did that and i've noticed an improvement in Layla.... but Layla has had dry skin since the day i got her.... try using a humidifier at night to add moisture in the air for him. also try to avoid the use of steriods (Should your vet suggest that) and seei f you can figure this out without that... however should he offer allergy testing and this is something you can afford... i say do it! |

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | i agree. don't feed chicken, turkey or beef at first. it may be food allergies or it may be environmental. instead of olive oil, maybe you should try salmon oil. dogs process animal oil better then plant oil, they can break it down better. you need to fix this problem from the inside out so i'd try a bunch of things first before putting him on meds.
