| Question about sudden excessive shedding Hello everyone. I have a sweet yorkie named Ruby and she is a year and a half old. Anyway, I noticed that her dog bed has been full of hair the last few times I washed it (about once every two weeks or so). I actually thought it was my other dogs hair flying around and just sticking to her bed because the other dog does shed (and is black too). Well, yesterday I gave her a bath and her hair was just falling out in blobs into the sink, I think if I would have kept bathing her the hair would still be coming out today!! It was freaky. I dried her and brushed her and the hair was just coming out. She doesn't have any bald spots, her skin looks very clear, and her color isn't changing, just thinning a lot. I haven't changed her food or done anything different. I asked my vet about it today (we were their with our other dog for a follow up) and he said to bring Ruby in if she is still losing hair in about 3 weeks because usually yorkies don't drop hair like that and they'd have to test for possible internal issues like thyroid or autoimmune problems. I was just wondering if anyone else out there has heard of this and can offer suggestions. I live near Chicago, so we're not even in shedding season if that was the case anyway. She has been a little less active lately, kinda hanging out with our great dane more than usual and just laying around with her, but nothing overly unusual since they are best pals. Thanks for any info. Sandy and Ruby |

| Your vet is correct but I wouldn't be waiting three weeks...maybe one week but it has been going on for awhile so I would make an appt now. It could be what he says and I would want to know now.

Donating YT 10K Club Member | A friend's yorkie was just diagnosed with an underactive thyroid. Her symptoms included hair loss. The hair loss was the tip off for her vet. In her case, the thyroid condition is genetic and not cause by an auto immune disorder. I would go ahead and make an appointment...

Mom to Marty & Maddie Donating Member | My vet suspects Marty might have an autoimmune disease and he's been experiencing hair loss as well. Like you, I first noticed it in the bath and I didn't think he'd have any hair left by the end of it. When he shakes (while wet) his hair covers the side of the bathtub and makes a huge mess. I feel so bad for him. I would definitely have your vet check it out as soon as possible. We are treating Marty for allergies now before putting him through the more aggressive treatments for autoimmune disease and/or vasculitis. Does Ruby have any scabs or dark spots on her ears? |

| Her ears look fine, no scabs or discoloration at all. Is the thyroid thing a problem, or easily treated? I won't jump to conclusions just yet, but she is such a young dog and has always been perfectly healthy. It sounds like the thyroid thing is common. Allergies could be a possibility, but it's winter.... I'll take her in to the vet regardless. |

| I just did a quick google on hair loss and thyroid issues. She doesn't seem to have gained any weight which is up there on the list of symptoms with thyroid issues. In fact, she has always been thin, can't put on an ounce, but eats like a pig, but she's always been that way. Hmm....I'm gonna get her in this week and I will of course post the outcome. Sounds like there is something for sure going on. She only weighs 3.7lbs but she looks bigger because she is tall and long, just so dainty....maybe there's a reason for that. Thanks everyone. |
