| really worried acting strange hi,I have a 1 year old male yorkie and here lately he's been acting very different.I took him to the vet about a cough he's had he gave him a shot and some pills to take said it was nothing any different than what a person would suffer from this time of the year going out and coming back in and getting cool.I'm worried cause he just sleeps alot here lately doesnt want to play like he used too and I've noticed an ocaisional shaking or so it appears(maybe its just me looking for something or maybe he's just cold)it just worries me.He also hasnt been fixed because I dont want him to be.I'm hoping to find him a partner.Could that be whats wrong?I know alot of it is he's mad at me for taking him to the vet and the whole shot thing,he really doesnt like that place, for that very reason.Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks,Spanky's mom |

Yorkie Kisses are the Best! Donating Member | poor baby - I don't know what could be wrong - but does he act normal when he IS playing ? I don't know about the shaking - I've heard some yorkies will shake but I always thought it was from fear or excitement - Is this when it happens ? Is he eating and drinking normally ? Maybe try another vet and see what they say ? |

| Does he act lethargic when you see him shaking? Hypoglycemia, maybe? Have you tried giving him some Nutrical when you see him shaking? |

| I've been told that kennel cough,(which can be contracted in areas other than a kennel) is the equivilant of human broncitis. Fevers, chills, shakes, despression like behavior. If your Yorkie is one that is under four pounds or has a short haircut a spike in weather or weather 65 degrees or under can cause shivers, even just turning on the ac in some dogs who are getting through a cold. If he has a cold, more than likely those are the symtoms that come with it. It sounds like the Vet gave him some medicine and shots to help him out but I've heard that the best cure for a doggy cold after a visit to the vet is to let it run is do course. Kinda like what we do with a human cold. He probably needs the extra sleep and a warm sweater or blanket will probably help the shakes and a good rubbing. Ofcourse this is just an opinion. Hopefully it's just him getting through the cold. Good luck I hope he gets better soon!!!

| Check his temperature. If he has a fever, it would explain lethargic and other symptoms. If appetite is poor, boil chicken and rice and see if that helps. I'd give him the Nutrical, a little on your finger will do it. It won't hurt. If you don't have that, use Karo syprup or honey. If symptons continue would call my vet. Hope this helps. |

| my puppy had a cough and it was called kennelcough.. i was worried so we took him to the vet.. Whatever they do do not let them do a procedure called a trans trachael wash on your puppy. What it is is when they put a tube down his throat and flush saline water in and suck back out to collect a culture of the bacteria in is lungs. What they did was flush the kennelcough bacteria deep into his lungs which caused him to have pnuemonia. Immediately after his procedure he could not breathe. He was in the critical care for a week and died that saturday. It was the most devasting thing that has ever happened to me. I felt like he was my child. Iam very sketchy about procedures and treatments that vets want to perform on these small breed dogs and i always do my research now before letting them do anything to my dog that could be critical to his health. Im sure your baby will be fine.. if it is kennelcough just make sure to treat him with some amoxydrops. It may sound really bad and it can last up to 2months but if treated properly he will recover.if you have any ?'s dont hesitate to ask. i would love to help. |

| Oh blykmyk44 I'm sooo sorry to hear of your tragedy!! Your information is VERY good, thank you for posting it. Alot of people don't realize just how common kennel cough is, especially in doggies that are in contact with other doggies. It's an air borne virus. Anyway I hope that your puupy's story can help others to ask alot of questions and do some research when it comes to invasive procedures because once they are gone an opology from the vet wont mean a anything. My heart goes out to you.

| Oh and I agree with the nutri-cal, I think everyone with a young yorkie should have a small supply of this, it's very good.

| Thanks to all who replied I took him back to the vet again earlier tonight cause I just couldnt stand it anymore.I almost left after I got there and the visit started My Spanky is very spoiled & doesnt like the taking his temp procedure needless to say it was all a horrible experience for us both,I broke down crying after I got back home w/him.The vet had to give him a sedative,he done an xray, took a blood sample to run some tests,he had a fever but most was related to the begining of the visit if you ask meas he was taking his temp the thermometer had blood on it & the vet says"I hope I didnt rupture anything"like I said the entire visit to me was a nightmare! The vet also said the xray showed a little fluid in his lungs, and inflammed pancreas, which he said could be related to the lung situation..?Long story short I gotta make him finish these pills change his diet and wait on blood results before I'll know anymore.Got my fingers and toes crossed. |

| Update Well we got the results back on his blood test and the vet said that everything checked out fine he's just got a little infection due to the cold and to just continue to keep giving him the pills he had originally gave him.But I'm still worried cause he just isnt the same. The shaking continues its like he's scared all the time. He doesnt play anymore at all he's eating fine and drinking fine, but now when he goes somewhere with me he's constantly shaking and his breathing is heavy like a pant type with his tongue out,but yet wants to go w/me when I leave he's used to riding??? Could this be his hormones? I'm gonna try the nutrical & see if that helps.I hope it does,I'd really like to have my Spanky back |

| I am having a hard time understanding exactly what you are saying. Is he shaking only when he goes in the car with you or just all the time? If he is doing it after what I thought seemed to be a horrible vet experience than I guess it is understandable that he is nervous. If he is not acting normal and shaking all the time I think I would take him to a different vet and see what they say. I just thought the whole vet visit sounded sketchy. My 3 go in and out all day into the AC and they do not get sick, I have NEVER had a dog get sick from that. Not in 25 yrs of owning dogs. This is just my opinion however, you have to do what you feel is best for Spanky. Oh and I think it is highly unlikely it has anything to do with his hormones. Good Luck and keep us posted, I hope he gets back to his normal self soon Again that is just my opinion. BTW, How big is Spanky? He sounds a little old for hypoglycemia unless he is a tiny and even then you say he is eating and drinking normally? Is he going to the bathroom normally too? Just thought I would ask..
