| Shots & Teeth Hi Everyone! I took my two girls in this morning for shots. Bailey is 2, 5lbs 3 oz & Angel is 1 3lbs 8oz. They just needed boosters today and Baileys eyes are running again..sighhh They both did ok with the first shot but the bordatello shot (which my vet prefers rather then the spay she says it lasts longer and doesn't cause side effects as the spray does) Bailey let out a little yelp and was fine (the vet says it burns and itches for a few seconds) but Angel yelped and yelped for about a min, I was about ready to cry. Angel is so quiet, rarely barks and is just a laid back dog. I felt really horrible, like when your infant child is getting shots. Angel then licked me and proceeded to ignore me...she is mad at me! Anybody else have experience like this? Angel is a yorkie biewer and her breath is bad, the vet looked at her teeth and says they have alot of build up on them for her age. She eats mostly dry food has a ton of chewys and toys. Anything I can use to keep the tartar down? I really do not want to put her under to clean her teeth.

| I would brush her teeth daily. Kibble doesn't do a whole lot of anything for them. Ellie had been eating kibble and she had periodontal disease, so don't trust hard food to do it. Are you doing yearly vaccines for DHPP instead of every three years after the first year booster?

| Bailey lets me brush her teeth, but Angel will not. She is stubborn about somethings. I do put some dogpaste on my finger and rub her teeth a couple times a week. They both had DHPP and Bordetella Boosters this morning. Angel is running around playing, acting just fine but I am worried about Bailey she is so listless. I picked her up and brought her to her food (which she ate)but she gave a little whimper when I did pick her up. I tried throwing the ball for her and she just let it go....that is not normal at all. Do you think she is just sore and doesn't feel well from the shot? What is a bad reaction? She has never done this before.

| It is very normal for them to be tired. That shouldn't last more than a day I would think (unless the lepto vaccine is given then it can last longer). If she isn't better by morning you might want to call the vet. I am funny about thing like this though (I worry too much) and would be sitting up all night if it were Ellie (I am not saying that is necessary though).

| I prefer the intranasal bordetella vaccine. When a dog contracts bordetella, it infects the respiratory mucosa. By giving an intranasal vaccine, it initiates an immune response in the mucosa (producing IgA antibodies - "surface" antibodies). It offers better protection from the disease. The downside, however, is the vaccine offers immunity for a shorter amount of time. With the subcutaneous vaccine, it initiates an immune response in the blood (producing mostly IgG antibodies). I don't believe this offers as much protection to a disease that infects the mucosa of the respiratory tract. This vaccine is longer lasting though. But like I said, doesn't offer as much protection against a respiratory disease.

| She could be tender, and not feeling herself after the shot. I'd give it a little time, and if she doesn't perk up I'd give the vet a call.

| I called the vet; I have her cell number. She said to call her if Bailey is not doing better this afternoon. I was up until early this morning with her. She will be 3 in April and I have never seen this reaction before. The vet uses a very tiny needle and not that much vaccine. It must be the bordetella shot. That will never happen again. I had to give Bailey water by eye dropper because she wouldn't drink from her bowl this morning. She is chasing her ball a little bit but seems wobbly. I'll be home all day so I will watch her.

| Wobbling after a vaccine is usually associated with the rabies shot. That would be considered neurological. Since she didn't have rabies I don't know what it could be but she needs to go to the vet. I would not be comfortable waiting any longer. It is just not a good sign. I would also make your vet give only one vaccine in a day next time.
