Ok marrow bones are a big NO NO, got it. They're off my "list of food to buy." I'll stick to rabbit meaty bones for right now. I think I'm going to start them off the first week with ground beef. I'll see how they adjust to just that one meat for about a week to a week and a half (depending on how they do) and then slowly each week add another meat to the mix. That should also help determine what Codie is truly allergic to. I'll start with beef, then add rabbit, then venison. If all of those meats agree with them (and Codie's allergies are in check), I'll try adding lamb. If that's good, then turkey and last chicken. I'll even give ground pork a try (hopefully it won't make them gassy lolol)

I didn't know that you should always freese the meat for 48 hours before thawing it and feeding them. Thanks for that tip!! I just wrote it on my instruction list (as you can probably tell, I have a lot of lists lolol)

As for the Vitamin E, I will definitely give it to them in addition to the grizzly salmon oil. Can one of you ladies please post a link to buy it on-line? I'm not sure if it needs to be in liquid form or what or even if there's a different type of Vitamin E for canines vs. humans.
Sounds like you are getting it all worked out

Vitamin e, you can get from any health food stores, I buy it in liquid capsules, natural vitamin e is better than synthetic. Theres no difference between the one for humans vs canines. This is not where I get mine from (as i'm in the UK) but this is what they are- http://www.roysvitamins4health.com/page370.cfm. I buy the 100iu natural capsules.

Do you make them sawllow the capsules? I wonder if I could buy it in liquid form and just squirt some into their food. If not, Codia and Tia can definitely swallow the capsules but Cali is extremely tiny. I have trouble getting her to swallow her monthly heart worm pill -- I have to smash it and mix it in with some nutrical.

Mine will swallow them but you can squeeze them onto the food too, either is fine, just whatever works for them best

Canned has preservatives, so when you can do fresh, that is absolutely the best choice!

It's better for their teeth to eat raw- the starches from kibble can get caked in the teeth and cause all kinds of tartar damage.

With the raw, since it is soft, it gets dissolved MUCH faster with the saliva.

If you are really concerned about it, though, I suggest a product called LEBA, which is a teeth spray. The ones you add to food or water can sometimes be damaging, but really all the LEBA is is a little apple cider vinegar and I think water. But I'm not entirely sure.

I DO feed BARF, and the store I worked for distributed both BARF and Nature's Variety.

As far as the quality on BARF, everything is human grade. Our philosophy on the veggies is that, dogs DO eat animals, and animals only. So yes, they need the meat. But they also eat the stomach contents of their prey- (Tripe helps handle this requirement), but the prey is normally herbivorous, and those partially digested contents are replaced by the pulpy veggies.

I'm glad to see so many who make their raw- I like the no hassle approach of premade, myself. But I like that we have so many knowledgeable people who do RAW. We can all agree on one thing- It has AWESOME benefits.

Man, I am so jealous - yet again....

Jen,
Your guys are gonna love Raw. TJ and Roxy were in pure delight! But since they have Liver Issues, I had to stop the Raw. I am hoping for a miracle and one day be able to go back to Raw.

Honestly though, if I were you, I would start out with one of the "premade" brands first. At least for the first week or two. This way everyone can adjust. The brands that I would recommend are Aunt Jeni's and Bravo. There are tons of different choices within those two brands and they are filled with the right amount Meat, Bones and Organs. Once you have established that they all like the Raw and their Poops are good, then you can go right over to make your own raw

Best of Luck!

I have Bragg Apple Cider Vinegar and I always put a little bit in their water to keep their teeth pearly white. Love that stuff.

Its great to see you jumping right into RAW feeding!!! The gang is going to love it. Your much braver then i was when i started feeding raw. I started with premade. I still feed premade most of the time and a couple meals a week are raw chicken. morgan eats AFS and nature's variety. AFS is all meat and NV has veggies mixed in. She also gets a joint supplement and fish oil (which i hate giving because it makes her beard smell... any suggestions on that lara? LOL)

This thread is full of great information.

I'm actually off to the store now to pick up some more food for morgan

good luck!

This is great info, how much does it cost to to go raw?Meaning is it alot more than feeding good dry food?
I would be worried about the bones ,I am assuming everyone is when they first start.
I take it either raw or dry you cannot do both?
