| Need feeding advise!!! Several weeks ago I wrote in telling of my Male Yorkie, Buster and his several pancreatic attacks. Well, so far so good. Knock on wood. I have been feeding him 3 times a day. He is eating low fat canidae "Platinum" and he gets digestive enzymes. My question is how much should I feed him. He weighs 13.5 lbs (big boy), but he is lean, the bag says for weight control he should get up to 3/4 cup and for weight maintance up to 1 cup. Is that too much to feed him, 3/4 cup a day, split up 3 times a day? How much would you all feed him for his size??? I soak the kibble in hot water so it gets soft, so when I look at it, it looks like alot more. Any advice would be really helpful! Thank! |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | 3/4 - 1 cup doesn't sound like too much at all. How do his ribs feel - that is a good weigh to determine if he should lose weight or if he's just fine. I hope others w/ pancreas experience can chime in - bc they may have some great advice!

| Well, I can feel his ribs somewhat. But then he is a lean tall yorkie and always has been. The vet wants me to feed him 3 x a day to keep his tummy busy and keep those bad pacreatic enzymes working, or maybe it is not to keep them working, well, you know what I mean!! I thought 3/4 would be a good amount. Now my other yorkie is a little on the pudgy side, so I put here on the same stuff, hoping the chicken in the platinum doesn't aggrevate her alergies. Thanks for answering. Anyone who wants to chime in feel free, More the merrier! Thanks Wyliesmom... |

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | does he totally finish the 3/4 of a cup? you can keep him on that amount of a while and see how he does. if he appears to be getting skinnier you can give him a cup. or you can give him a cup if he eats all his food and if he starts getting fat back off a little. when morgan was on kibble she was getting 1/4 - 1/2 a cup a day and she's 4lbs.

| No, that is my little sissy( we call her sissymouse) she is a corker. Long on cute, but comes up short on smarts. Think she was dropped on her head when she was born, LOL!!! She just melts my heart when she lays in my arms and looks up at me. Her motto is "Girls just want to have fun!" Buster's ribs can be felt, but the vet says he should not gain to much weight as he has that chronic pancreatic thing going on. He weighs 13.5 lbs now, he is as I said earlier very tall and long for a yorkie, I think his dad was wilt chamberlin! Anyway, he always eats all his kibble at dinner time. He is eating 3x a day now, I am leaving a little dry kibble out so he can free feed in between meals. He has always had a good appetite, never fussy or finicky. Don't yorkies always seem to be hungry! Good thing they are not as big as German Shepards !! Anyway, I guess I will continue to feed the way I am. Sounds as if you all agree that I am doing the right thing. 7timesblessed thanks so much. You helped my last time and really do appreciate it. Everyone is so great on this forum. I visit every day! Thanks |

| How old are your dogs? If the dog without problems isn't atleast 7 or 8 I wouldn't give them senior food. Okay, I don't know if that sentence makes sense. The doggie with pancreatis has to eat the senior food for the lower fat and protein. Why is your other dog on it? It might not be meeting his/her needs.

| Food amount That 3/4 cup a day sounds about right for a 14 pound dog.Depends on how active he is. I have 2 Mini Schnauzers that weigh about 18 pounds and they get 1 cup each a day. I split it up and they get 1/2 in the morning and the other half at night. They are built like little tanks> muscular. They get a lot of exercise.Did the vet tell you to wet his food? I've read that its not that good to do,causes bloat and swells in their stomach. But it may help your dog in digestion, I don't really know the facts on that matter. David |

| Both dogs are going to be 9 years old. I do soak the kibble in warm water. Buster is built like a brick ----house! Sissy is a little on the pudgy side. As far as exercise, we just got back from a walk (this is new) well that was a disaster! The vet said execise would be good for both. Got to get some harness type collars and use regular leashes(which I have) but decided to use those extentable(sp) type. Won't do that again. Spent most of the walk untangling them LOL!!! Will try again tomorrow. Sissy likes to pick up stuff to chew along the way... Well. thats about it for any questions you all had. I am exhaused. Gonna take a nap! Thanks... |

| Front pull collars I just bought 3 of those front pull harness's for little pullers. I got one for my daughters Yorkie and 2 for my Mini Schnauzer's. I have yet to try them, just got them yesterday and I've been gone today. I'll try them out on Sunday. The Mini's are strong little pullers. If I had some skates I believe they could pull me, Ha David |
