| Is 1/3 cup of food at one time too much? Ellie needs just over a cup of food a day (homecooked) to have a good amount of calories. She is about 5 1/2 pounds. I was feeding her 4x a day because it is better for her liver. That would have made it just over 1/4 cup per serving. I want to go back to feeding 3x daily but that would make it just over 1/3 cup per serving and that seems like a LOT to feed her at one time. I don't want her to get all bloated up. What do you think?

| I'm sorry but I can't help but I would like to know. I have similar concern with feeding. (Over feeding or under feeding.) What is the proper amount?? |

| If she gains too much, then cut back, if she loses then increase the food, if she doesn't gain or lose then she's eating the right amount unless she is already underweight. Feeding a specific amount is taylored to your own dog. Some dogs are more energetic than others so they need a little more calories. If the dog is very laid back and not too active, then they don't need as many calories as the real active dogs. |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | This isn't too much. Marcel eats about 1/3 cup per feeding (3xday), per his nutrtionist and he is 2.13 pounds! It seems like a lot, but it works for him very well. He is maintaining his weight beautifully. Maybe see how she does w/ any "bloat" and adjust from there?

| Okay, I guess if Marcel can handle it, Ellie can handle it since she's double his size. Akina, Yorkiedaze gave some good advice. You really have to know your dog and how much they should weigh. There are generic charts online that tell you about how many calories dogs should have a day. These are just a rough estimate though.

| Yorkies can have people food but you just have to be careful. I wouldn't feed table scraps because they are way too high in salt and fat. You could boil some chicken and feed them the actual meat (not skin). They can have all kinds of veggies. It is perfectly safe for them to eat an entirely homemade diet as long as it's done right. Ellie is quite active and her metabolism is FAST so we have to feed her that much. The vet has said if she is hungry, let her eat. What are you feeding your Yorkies now?

| Feeding table food is not the same as feeding people food..People food is good for them as long as you don't give grapes, raisins, onions, fatty foods, seasonings, etc. My recommendation is not to feed them from your table at all because they will learn to beg... Make them their own food (no seasonings) and feed them at their own meal times. Kibble is just incredibly over processed people food and by-products in the lower quality foods. If you're thinking of homecooking, it may be helpful to read a good book on homecooking for your dogs. Supplements must be added if you homecook for your dogs. I agree, if your dog is hungry let them eat unless they're obviously obese and overeating. I let Miko eat however much he wants and his weight has maintained at right around 11 lbs (not an ounce overweight).

| Lol, I should have worded that differently. I agree with Yorkieluv. I don't give Ellie free reign and let her have whatever she wants. She eats 3-4 times a day but I decide on the amount and some people watching her eat might think it looks like a lot of food but she does well with it... When she used to eat kibble she was free fed.

| You said it right I was just backing you up It takes a lot more people food to get them full than kibble.

| I did the math on that once. I think it was like over $400 for the year with Amish chicken. It would be LOTS cheaper to just throw her some Science Diet like we used to.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Yep, with ya! My dogs get tilapia/mashed potatoes/green beans for dinner....I eat cereal. In my next life, I want to come back as my yorkie.
