| Does He Have A Silk Coat???? I have asked the question before on this forum but left more confused .I want to know if a yorkie catches leather ear is that proof that they have a silk coat? OR can a modified coat develop leather ear also?I also thought I read that it is not contagious so what gives ?the little girl I rescued has it now my pup looks like he has it around the ear edges and his ears are cold. Its not exactly hot here in mich.but its not cold either and he always goes out with clothing on. IF anyone can help shed some light on this for me it will be greatly appreciated.

Leather ear, yorkie crud, or black ear.....whatever you wish to call it, most likely obtained by silk coated dogs that are more prone to the cold. Any documentation written about it says that it isn't contagious, but speaking to a few people that have had the unfortunate problem have found that it is....all equipment, brushes, combs, etc should be washed before using it on each dog. Dogs living in colder climate are more prone to it. But, humidity can be a contributing factor. Did you visit vassarsquare.com or shooter website has some information on it

| Omg! yes I have visited shooter's web page before I got my pup and it was not supposed to be contagious.I have given my pup this leather ear from the older dog I rescued. I am using the lotromin and alcohol not seeing any results.I have been using it for about two weeks.Does anyone know of other ways to treat it? and does that mean my pup has a silky coat?or modified?this is so frustrating I don't know what to do really. and the vet are unbelieveable here I have taken her to four vets and never went back for various reasons and not a one could tell me any thing about leather ear or how to treat it. one said she was just old, another said she never heard of it,and the other two said evaded my question and in the bustle of getting her meds I forgot to ask AGAIN!!!!! PLEASE HELP anyone with knowledge about this problem,my girl fungus? has spread from her ears to her nose to her tail to her legs all four and her eye rims.I NEED YOUR HELP. I can't let my boy go through this

| Lotrimin 2% and keeping in clean and dry applying alcohol. It should take care of it. The other thing I've heard of being used is the medication for ring worm is effective. Yes, the silk coats are more prone to contracting this. I don't see where you've provided a pic of your pup to evaluate the coat.

The treatment will take more than 2 weeks and should be done about 3 times a day.

| You learn something new every day on this site. I have never heard the term "Leather Ear". I hope it's not painful and that your little guy will get better real soon. Best wishes to you. |

| Oooooh! she has a silk coat I believe thin silk. and his coat is kind of thin not thick at all but is not quite like hers.both of their coats are damaged, hers from being sick and his from me not knowing the correct brush/comb and products too use, not to mention I have cut his hair several times myself.

| Silk coated. The one on the far left looks like a little coarser silk.
