| Both my girls always had silky hair from the beginning... but it was the flyaway kind. I was BRAVE and cut off pearls long flyaway coat that was to the ground... and now it is only about an inch long but definately a bit heavier, so I'm hopignit will "hang" better now. I must mention also I actually SHAVED Pearl down to about 1/2 inch when I did it. But I did leave her head hair and just CUT that a bit but didn't shave her head

| I just went and looked at pictures of Gracie and it looks like her hair started getting a silky texture at about 4 months. I combed her every day with a fine tooth comb and a lot of puppy fuzz would come out. I didn't cut it and she had a pretty nice silky yorkie coat at 7 month. They really all vary from what I understand though. My other 2 are cottons so no help there.

| Diesel's coat is also cottony. He is a year old and has NEVER had a puppy cut. I have trimmed his hair a bit but it has never been cut. So for the most part he has a full coat. I am wondering if I should get his hair cut and see if it will come in silky. His mom and dad didn't really have cottony coats. At least not that I remember.I just don't know what to do. I really wanna get his hair cut but I am scared to do it. I guess it will grow back tho. Michelle |

Yorkie Kisses are the Best! Donating Member | Hi...Cutting the hair will not make it grow silky !! Actually my Chanel had way more silk in her coat than she does now - she is 4. After about 1-1/2 years - you should know what type of coat your yorkie has - but I THINK it's a myth that cutting brings out better hair - it doesn't from what I've seen. |

Yorkie Kisses are the Best! Donating Member | Oh Kelli ? I just looked at your avatar - you are going to have a FULL Haired yorkie !! Your puppy actually has more hair than my Chanel did... A word of advise - use a GOOD shampoo and conditioner and maybe a light oil when she gets a little older. I'm going to love watching your yorkie grow....she sure has some hair ! Here's Chanel about that age - you can already tell she was going to have alot of hair - and NOT silky either lol |

I JUST posted a question in gen. chat about Kiki's coat. She is almost five months old, and I HAD to shave her....her hair wasn't just thick/cottony, it was CURLY, and I just couldn't even get a comb through her anymore. It was traumatic losing all her black puppy curls , but the graying roots of the new hair coming in is SO much softer and easier to brush. They say their hair does go through several different stages, during the first couple of years. So I see what Red is saying...cutting it won't MAKE it silkier....but sometimes (depending on your dog) cutting off the fuzzy puppy ends does REVEAL the silkier hair coming in, better.

His hair is going through some major changes right now. He has a tri colored head right now, black tips with silver in between and gold at the roots. I can't bare to cut his hair on his head, I always put it up in a topknot with a cute bow and if I were to cut it now I woulden't be able to do that. So for now, the hair on his head will stay tricolored until it is long enough to where it can be cut and still be able to put it in a topknot. And on top of that he is transitioning from puppy hair to adult hair. Soooooo many changes!!! I will be glad when it is all over!!
