| Great article thanks for sharing. I love my Spaw sessions with Buster. I am lucky because his hair is not too thick and we keep it short. I comb and pet him and he just relaxes with a little sigh. The hardest part is trying to trim the hair on his pads. I was glad that I was taught to comb him out before washing so as not to make the tangles worse.

| I just finished giving Lilah a paw trim, sanitary trim, nail cut and bath/blow dry when I read this And Lilah is easy, I don't have to brush her every day now that she's 8 months (a few months ago she used to tangle like crazy!). My poodle mix on the other hand needs to be brushed more often plus I have her groomed because I'm not experienced with clippers and afraid I'll mess her up |

| I have three dogs that are the breeds that need grooming. I used to take Sam to the groomer once a month -- then I had two then three. At $150.00 a shot for three.. I have tried to take less and/or groom at home. When life happened and I just did not have the time or money the shih tuz really did get matted---not like the article at all -- but in a couple of months. My groomer is a friend and he read me about brushing. I brushed.. but I didn't realize it was a "surface" brush and the matts were underneath. Poor Bailey. Now I have them all in "puppy cuts" and bath a couple of times at home between grooming. When the hair gets long enough to require brushing...off we go I agree-- if you are not going to care for the dogs why have them. Grooming, vet care, dental care all of it. I hate to think of a little shih tuz being an outside dog.

| I don't get owners who don't know their dogs needs, but then we've all read the horror stories that some poor dogs live through. We have two pure bred yorkies, but their coats are so different. Caleb's coat is a breeze, even long, it hardly ever tangles. He gets brushed most days, the most he's ever gone without a quick brush is three. The brush glides through his coat. Now Pippi has a curly cotton coat that tangles and would mat like the dog in the pictures if not groomed often. I do it every day and she always has small tiny tangles. You take on a dog, you take on it's needs, medical, emotional, physical.

| My neighbor has a Bichon that has to have anesthesia to be groomed and then has to be shaved...very matted. Buster doesn't like to be brushed, but does get brushed almost every day....he goes to the groomer every 4-5 weeks. She doesn't shave him down but she does let me know if I missed too many mats.

| I am very lucky with Huey in that he rarely gets any mats and I usually just brush him weekly with his bath, even when he is floor length. His face is a different story-he can get "crunchy faced" within hours of a bath, and we have little fights several times weekly as I try to fix that. He goes to the groomer every few weeks for his feet and nails-I usually do the rest, and the groomer tells me all the time that he wished everyone took as good of care of their dogs coats as I do. I am blessed to have a mostly tangle-free dog...

| LOL.... Well my mom owns a salon.... that's really the only reason I keep up with mine. Otherwise I'd have a hard time spending the $$$$. That would be an intrusion with my collar spending
