| Constant licking and bad coat? I have a tiny 5lb female Yorkie that is fixed and a gentle male French Bulldog that is about 25-30lbs and not fixed. They both spend days outside in the cement walled back yard. They get along great. Have been together for years. Problem is I want to grow her hair out. But he has this terrible habit. Actually they both do as she seems to love it. Of licking her constantly all over her. He can literally make almost her entire coat wet with his nasty saliva. She just stands there and loves it. Now I don't know if there is a connection. But her hair does not grow easily. It breaks off and is constantly matted. And hard to keep clean with his constant licking. SO I just keep it cut fairly short. But I'd like to grow it out. First solution is to get him fixed. But I also want to dress her up in some sort of old tshirt, home made coat or something. That I can replace regularly, wash regularly and is cheap. Any good ideas out there for this? Seems like pro dog show'ers must have a cheap solution for this. To keep the hair protected from damage and allowed to grow. And something that will cover as much of her body as possible. That I can wash or just throw out if they get to nasty. Any other ideas to stop his licking? Last edited by moab; 05-20-2013 at 12:48 PM. |

| Licking I have the same problem except mine is a cat licking the backs of two of my yorkies. It is matted and yucky where Chirp tries to groom them.

| Welcome to Yorkie Talk. I think you are going to have an uphill battle changing a behavior (the tongue baths) that has been going on for years. It might not be worth upsetting their happy, friendly routine. Also, your little girl may have what is called a cotton coat (as opposed to silky coat) and that could be partly why it mats and breaks so easily. If that is the case, I would definitely recommend keeping her saddle short and allowing her to enjoy her tongue baths from her buddy. If you still want to grow her out, you could use any dog tshirt to protect her hair from slobber, although clothing often causes matting. Show exhibitors use a silk wrapping jacket, but their dogs also have their hair wrapped up in multiple tiny pony tails. I would love to see pics of your pooches. They sound like a really cute pair.

| Someone recently posted about using baby onsies to keep dogs from licking surgical incisions. I don't know why that wouldn't work to keep her buddy from licking her all over. I remember the poster saying that they cut out a hole for the tail. I guess you would have to cut out an area for peepee breaks, too, but they are usually 3 for $10 or cheaper on sale, and wash up well. On a personal experience note, I know my Huey has long hair and when I dress him, he becomes very easily tangled.
