| Nail Clipping Hi I am having major issues with Maya and getting her nails clipped. she hates the vet and I cant stand hear her screaming when we go there. I tried to do it myself at home and she also cries and screams like crazy. I tried treats and everything. what else can be done? is there something that I can give her that will calm her down? prescription pills/liquid? her nails are so long and must be clipped already! |

Donating YT 3000 Club Member | Definitely is you can hold her it might help. How old is Maya? If she is a pup she will start to get used to it. Make is a fun experience for her. Save a special treat just when you go to the groomers to get nails cut. Use that as a distraction. |

| Play with their nails constantly while you are holding them. This really helps especially if they are a puppy. |

| Blazer recently started "fighting" me when it came to his nail clipping. I've played with his feet from the day he was born and he doesn't mind that but all of a sudden he didn't like his nails trimmed- especially the front nails. What I had been doing with him was having him on top of the tall garbage can and trimming the nails. But I started to trim them after his bath and now it is a breeze again! I'll give him his bath then while his nails are nice and soft I wrap him in the towel and lay him on his back on my lap. I take out his feet one at a time and clip the nails then put that foot back and take out the next. Works like a charm now! Plus, it helps me see the nails easier than when I let him stand so I get the nails shorter and smoother.

| Take her to a groomer that can use a dremel to file them down. It might be the snapping sound and feel of the clippers freaking her out.

| It only takes clipping into the quick one time and they never get over it. But, I imagine it is pretty painful. Get someone to help you. Gently but firmly hold the pup in your arms, one arm under the belly and the other one under the neck/head with you hands up toward your shoulders. Hold them up, off of the table, so that they can't push with their legs. A groomer/vet tech showed my husband and me how to do it this way. It makes the job a lot easier and doesn't stress all of us out. My DH holds them and I clip their nails. Hold the paw with one hand and clip the nail front to back, not side to side. If her nails are real long, just clip a little at a time over a few weeks time, because the quick will recede as you do this. If you clip too much at first, you will clip into the quick and she will always be afraid. It is good to have some styptic powder on hand in case you do clip into the quick to stop the bleeding. There are YouTube video on clipping nails too.
