| Won't let me brush her...help!!! Hi. My 4.5 month old Lily will not let me touch her with her brush or comb. The second she sees it she freaks out, starts shaking and runs for cover. I have tried letting her play with the brush, tried gently brushing her when she's sleeping...nothing works. In the meantime her fur is tangle free but it's getting longer and I want her to get used to it as soon as possible before there is any matting. Thanks for any and all advice |

| My girls were like that too but you have to keep at it as they need to be groomed. I did frequent short intervals at first. I remember Abbey used to bite me and now on occasion Miley tries. A firm NOO! That sounds so sad that she shakes and runs. Try cuddling with her and brushing softly telling her shes a good girl. Eventually she will be ok if you keep trying. Good luck.

| I'm also having problems with my new yorkie =( She only 3 months old and i just got her this past weekend. The lady who previously owned her obviously didnt take care of her hair very well, she has mats all on her legs, sides, and belly. This morning I finally was able to get the rubber band the lady had on the top of her head out and of course that hair is just another big mat now which makes me sad. I dont want to have to out that one out cause she looks super cute with bows. I bought everything under the sun yesterday from petsmart :the groomers comb, wire brush, conditioner, and detangling spray, but she want really let me comb the mats at all... she freaks out and suggestions??? she cant go to a groomer for another 3 weeks after she get her third set of shots. I showed the groomer at petsmart yesterday and she was worried if i dont get them out asap she'll have to be completely shaved and they might not be able to do it. They said they have to refer her to a vet and it's not going to be pretty if the vet does it =( Then they also told me they shouldnt be shaved until they're atleast 6 or 7 months old cause it can mess up the texture of their hair... is this true? |

If this doesn't work, ie; you can't release the mat this way; then you might try, carefully using the scissors to cut through the most matted area, and try again to pick apart the rest of the mat. You will lose hair of course but it is a step that can be taken before shaving the mat out. If you don't have an assistant, then you can wrap her in a towel, all but the part you want to work on, and hold her on your lap, and try again. Be careful with your scissors. If you are not used to using scissors, get a pair of blunt tipped scissors, a small sized pair. Good Luck, let us know how it goes.

| Combing everyday from day one helps get them ready for the days when the coat starts to get long. I didn't have trouble with combing or brushing but when I started putting the top knot in she was already almost a year old and she hated it. I almost gave up but decided I was going to accomplish this. What I have found is that being consistent is the way to go. The more I did it on a daily basis, the more she realized she was going to have to put up with it. It took a couple of weeks and it did not always look the greatest at first but now she just puts her head down and lets me do it. When we first started doing it she would try to get away, she would turn her head back and forth and even try to put the top of her head down flat so I couldn't get to it! I think you comb consistently a couple of times a day and don't let your pup get away with running off that it will get easier and easier for you. You may not get as much done as you want at first but as they learn that you are going to be doing this daily and that they have to participate they will submit. Gracie is a very headstrong dog. If she does it yours will too. Just be gentle but persistent. |
