Combing everyday from day one helps get them ready for the days when the coat starts to get long. I didn't have trouble with combing or brushing but when I started putting the top knot in she was already almost a year old and she hated it. I almost gave up but decided I was going to accomplish this. What I have found is that being consistent is the way to go. The more I did it on a daily basis, the more she realized she was going to have to put up with it. It took a couple of weeks and it did not always look the greatest at first but now she just puts her head down and lets me do it. When we first started doing it she would try to get away, she would turn her head back and forth and even try to put the top of her head down flat so I couldn't get to it!
I think you comb consistently a couple of times a day and don't let your pup get away with running off that it will get easier and easier for you. You may not get as much done as you want at first but as they learn that you are going to be doing this daily and that they have to participate they will submit. Gracie is a very headstrong dog. If she does it yours will too. Just be gentle but persistent. |
