How to get a Yorkie Groomed Hey everyone! I'm new to this site, but I have a Yorkie who is 6 months old, and I LOVE her to death! Her name is Caedy (short for Caedmon, a poet from Yorkshire, England, clever, i know lol) Aaaaanyways, I haven't had her groomed yet, and I want her to have her hair kinda short, I can't handle constant brushing. She's just a household pet, not for show. I'm just wondering what to tell the groomer when I go in. Plus, roughly how much does it generally cost to get my little baby groomed? She's the sweetest thing in the world, and I truly love her with all my heart! <3

| Hi & welcome to YT!!! I have found that the best thing to do is find a picture of a cut you like and take it to the groomer with you. The usual term for what it sounds like you want is a "puppy cut" but you will want to be specific as to how long you want the hair to be when they are done. If you want anything longer than about an inch you'll need to find a groomer who will hand scissor, instead of just use clippers. I don't personally like the hair as short as they do it when they use clippers, but to each their own Just make sure to be specific about the length, or you may end up with a baby shaved to her skin (you'll see lots of horror stories in threads in this section). Also, make sure to let them know if you want to keep a topknot and if you want them to clip the hair on the nose and by the eyes, as they may not "assume" correctly. Good luck!!

grooming Ok, aquinn and I had almost the exact post, so I edited..... but do make sure your puppy is completely combed out....I have the occasional client who will show up with a dog that has not been brushed in weeks, full of mats... It is frustrating and really takes away from the overall pleasureable experience the groomer's should be... Last edited by SET Yorkies; 09-13-2009 at 04:51 PM. Reason: same post

thanks so far! I think i've heard the term 'puppy cut' before; I'm pretty sure that's what I want. Now, what if she has mats? Can I try and brush them out, or should i just cut them out????

Mats you can certainly take care of any mats yourself... Try to comb them out with a fine tooth comb first rather than cutting them out.... take small sections of hair, hold between your fingers very tightly as to not allow the hair to pull the skin as you comb and comb from in small sections from the ends to the root.... So basically, comb about a half inch section and then move up toward to root... If the mats are really bad, you can use scissors to slice through them slightly to make combing easier....

awesome. I'll make sure to do that! Also, roughly what would it cost to have my lil girl groomed? Do places charge more for grooming because yorkies are smaller, or do they charge less for it?
