| For parents who keep their babies hair long... Uni wears a cat's break away collar with her tags for ID and "just for looks". My question is about the hair around the neck. I used to keep it trimmed shorter but now that her all over hair is longer it would look funny if that was still trimmed short. I know show dogs have the full coat, but don't they wear a lead around their neck in the show ring? How does the hair lay around the collar? Also, her head hair overall is looking funny now. Her ear hair grows really fast. That area is long and her "sideburns" is long, but her "goatee"/under chin area is not as long. How should I trim? Should I just let it keep growing? Is the ear hair supposed to be long too? I was ok with her grooming/style before, but I'm growing it out long now, and I'm in unfamiliar territory now. Any help would be much appreciated.

| I may not be much help here, but wanted you to know that someone was reading your thread. I don't use a collar on my boys and have not shown them. I do keep Ben's hair long and will Rocky's too as soon as it grows out -- he is almost 6 months old. You can see their current hair styles on the GE Smilebox I made from yesterday's pictures. http://smilebox.com/playBlog/4d54457...&blogview=true Not sure if that is how it is supposed to be but I like it. I just had them trimmed, so the hair is not as long as it usually gets on Ben's ears. His seems to grow fast there too. His chin hair is very long. I have even thought of cutting it so that it does not always get wet when he drinks. I did just have his skirt cut too as it was dragging the ground too much. But none of these things really addresses the question of keeping it shorter or not around the neck for the collar. I would think it could just sort of tuck up under a layer and not be kept any shorter. Constant wear of a collar might tend to break off the hair a little. If I was going to do that I would be sure to order a silk one from Chattiesmom so it would minimize the breakage. Whatever you are doing seems great as I love the pictures you post of Uni -- what a cutie!

Donating YT 10K Club Member | If you keep one in coat...it's best not to wear any type of collar because the friction of the collar with the hair will cause matting or cause the hair to break off. A show lead is perhaps 1/4" nylon string with a slip that slides which makes a loop. It's worn higher up than a regular collar and since it's so thin the hair covers it.

Therapy Dog Donating Member | I've had Izzy in long coat since I got her as a puppy. She is so tiny (3#) that she is easy to maintain in my opinion. Izzy does not wear a collar at all only her Choke-Free Harness and she has all her tags attached to that if we go out. She is also microchipped so that also gives me peace of mind. I'm going to let Cosmo grow full coat too and see how that goes. It's really easy but then again she goes to our groomers once a month for the heavy duty stuff since I'm chicken little with clippers/scissors. I just maintain with baths, combing, etc.

| Thanks everyone. I like to keep Uni with a collar on all the time b/c she is too stealth without one on. I need to hear where she is all the time. I take it off when it's bedtime or bathtime, otherwise it's always on. And for looks too. Perhaps I will invest in a silk one then.

| All 3 of my Yorkies have a long/full coat! I have 3 Yorkies, my male Artie (5 yrs. old) has a full/long coat. I used to have his hair trimmed when he was a puppy but I was Traveling alot and I got tired of trying to find a "Good Groomer" w/c was Impossible! So when I got my 2nd Yorkie, Abigail (4 yrs. old) and then their daughter Pom Pom. I have been doing all their Grooming since they were born. I do have a couple of collars, but I only have them on when they are @ a "Party" or Public Function where they are watched by me! Just in case the Collar gets caught on something? I'm very Paranoid, since I have had Friends w/small Dogs that have choked to death, by accident of course. I have all 3 of them in choke-free Harnesses w/their Rabies Tag & Name/Cell# Tag w/c they only wear when they go out for their "Walks". I have Trained them NOT to dart out every time a Door is opened for any reason, they are also Trained off Leash so I can take them outdoors too! They are also Micro-chipped w/my current Info. I don't use their Harnesses on them unless they have Clothes on and the Harness is worn over a T-shirt, Sweater or Dress, depending on the Weather? Otherwise it will tear/break their Hair off and also cause it to Matt and Tangle. It's also very important to Condition the Coat before your Brush it, that will also cause the Hair to break-off and only grow to a certain length. It's alot of work to keep them in a full coat but it's worth it!
