HELP! Powder for Plucking Ears?

yep, ,ear powder is over in the grooming section, is inexpensive, and just makes it so easy to hold onto the hair,,and i just use my fingers,,still its easy,, and pretty painless for them,, think it hurt me more than them,, but once i did the first yank,,i realized it didnt hurt them,,but dont just tug on the hair,, YANK it! Nothing to it!! and i thought i'd never be able to do it,,,just like toenails,, still i can't clip em,, but the Peticure has taken care of that problem as well!! so now ,, long as we dont' have an anal gland problem,,lol,, I'm good for doing all their grooming!! Thanks to all of you for these great tips. I've never done Scooter's myself, only the vet and a few groomers have so I'm off to PetSmart to get the powder today. While I'm there I'm going to check out prices on scissors, clippers etc. I'm going to order Sue's DVD on Yorkie grooming and start doing him myself. I've been trimming some between grooming appointments with the few tools I have so I don't think it's going to be all that hard. A work in progress of course.

Oh definitely! I promise you...it doesn't hurt! Well my babies weren't bothered by it in the least...and Stedman is Mr. "I hate EVERYTHING" LOL.

I found the Ear Powder on the same isle that all of the shampoo and vitamins/supplements are on - yes, in the grooming section The one I got is called R-7 Ear Powder by Rich Health. I also picked up a bottle of the R-7 ear cleaning solution just to clean their ears out with (that is step 2 - the ear powder and plucking is step 1) There was only ONE bottle left of each...so I'm assuming alot of people use this brand - at least here anyway lol

LOL! I hear ya about the anal gland thing That really is one thing that I DON'T know if I would be able to do I do everything else...and I know that there ARE people who express their dogs anal glands themselves...but yikes! I just don't know LOL!

Let us know how everything goes when you groom your little cutie! My babies are getting bathed and groomed this weekend (minus the ears - which I have already done as everyone knows ) - grooming really isn't that hard either...I've been grooming Stedman for over 2 years now and Tatum for almost a year and 1/2, so I could probably do it in my sleep, LOL.

As a groomer I teach a lot of my clients how to do this so they can maintain the ears between groomings.
You DO NOT put the powder in with a q-tip!
The powder should come in a little squeeze bottle. Gently squeeze a little "pouf" of powder into the ear canal. Take your fingertip and use it to make sure the powder is down in there where the roots of the hair are.
Pluck all of the hair out at once, do not do a few hairs every day.
It is like S L O W L Y removing a bandaid, lol.
After all of the hair is plucked out, then you pour about 1/2 tsp of ear cleaning solution (made for pets, proper Ph level) into the ear canal. then massage this fluid into the ear canal by going behind the base of the ear and massaging vigourously at the base of the ear. Then wipe the fluid out with a flat cotton ball type make up remover pad, or a cotton ball.
This is how the vets do it, and how professional groomers do it.
I hope this is helpful.
If the powder does not get washed out, it can cause a problem too. Don't do 1/2 the job. Your dogs will feel better and smell better.

I just thought of this and wanted to ask you...after the plucking, and after cleaning the ears with the ear cleaning solution, should I put the Ear Drying Cream in their ears? This is one thing that I did not do the other day after I plucked and cleaned their ears. My bottles of Ear Powder and Ear Cleaning Solution say to do it (of course, they have a 3-step system and want you to buy ALL 3-steps...lol) but I didn't know if it was necessary or recommended? I've done it before in the past with Stedman (when I used a different brand of ear cleaner) but I didn't do the Ear Drying Cream this time.
