| Question for yorkie owners w/ THICK hair My yorkie Brinkly has really thick hair, does anyone have any advice for how to manage thick haired yorkies that have medium length hair. It's like the whenever he has a bath & a blow dry he stays neat looking for all of 10 minutes then he looks homeless again!!! Any advice is appreciated |

Therapy Dog Donating Member | Sorry - same here - I can comb Izzy and she'll look awesome with her bow and all...then....10 minutes later....wham....she's rolling around with the cats, scratching her head...lol. My husband didn't believe me until this past weekend when he actually saw me comb her and then 15 minutes later he said, "Hun...you're right.....she looks like you never combed her."

| Thanks Seriously, I'm glad to know that you both have the same problems. It seems that every yorkie I ever see is so pretty neat & neat, then there's my Brinkly who looks homeless & ragged. My aunt's yorkies never look as bad as Brinkly looks but she has her yorkies shaved down. I really do not want to do that though, especially w/ winter approaching. Have y'all ever tried getting their body hair thinned up? |

| Piper has wavy thick hair, and the only difference before and after I wash him is that it's shinier. LOL

Donating YT 30K Club Member | I took Cali to a great groomer who thinned out her coat so nicely. now she looks almost as silky as Pixie. Cali is always scratching so I had to do something to help with the mats. Now I can quickly brush her out everyday and she looks great.

| Thanks to all who have responded Thanks to all have responded. Pati, I'm glad to know that thinning out the hair made a difference. Brinkly has the weirdest hair, in my opinion. He has straight hair all though out the front of his body, then around the tail it wants to curl (especially in humid weather). I think he is soft coated, is your thicker haired girl soft coated also? Brinkly is 1 1/2 & his coat is still developing so I still don't feel like I know how to best fix his hair or have him groomed. Thanks again |

| Annie also has a very thick cottony coat. I use Aussie moist shampoo on her. I also brush her every single day, sometimes twice depending on what outfit she has had on. Velcro just loves her hair. For Annie the Aussie shampoo has been a miracle on her coat. They also have a spray leave in condtioner that I have used and I really like it as well. Phoebe(rip ) had a silky coat and on her it was just awful. No matter what I did it just always looked greasy, it tangled up really easy. But that was before I knew about using Aussie on them. I have kinda found it to be a trial and error. What works for one may not work for another. Just like humans. After having both types of coats, I actually prefer the cotton coat. BTW the pic of annie in my avatar in her purple dress, that was taken after a 3 hour long car ride in her carseat and then walking around Pike Place Market(Seattle) for about an hour.

| I just cut mine short. I do weekly baths and it seemed that was not enough with their THICK hair, but then it took so long to blow dry and matted every day. Sammy's hair is curly on her back and around her butt too so even when it was long it stuck straight up. I LOVE Loki short, even his face is short. Sammy's face is still long and she still has a top knot, but the groomer took her to about 1 inch everywhere and shaved her belly. Maybe we will let her grow out long for winter. PM me if you want some pictures.

| Try the Blow Dry Cream by Plush Puppy. I know exactly what you are talking about, this stuff is great. It makes the coat lay flat and shine but it still has lots of movement. (Its non-greasy also.) I washed my puppy one time and forgot to use the blowdry cream...omg...she had mats by like day 2. It is definitely worth giving it a try. |
