It breaks my heart to hear this! I know how you're feeling as I have been there and I know how heartbreaking it is to watch and to feel so utterly helpless. Continue to pray for Michelle and your entire family.:(

Enough already! I check for updates on Michelle every day and just shake my head in disbelief on how much she and the rest of your family has had to endure! God please help this family in need!! Praying.. Praying.. Praying!!

I have just read Michelle's story. I can't believe what a strong woman she is and how much she has had to endure. My thoughts are prayers are with Michelle and her family.

Wow, I'm so sorry. I just don't know what to say. It sure does seem like the doctor's are missing a lot of stuff. I know they are only human, but geez...

Have they mentioned the possibility of referring her to a larger hospital that might be more able to care for her needs better than they are able to where she is now? I have no idea where she is now, but I do know that some clinics, such as Mayo, have better reputations than others when it comes to dealing with certain things. When my brother was sick and in need of a transplant, I looked up surgeons at some of the top hospitals and called or emailed them directly. All of the one's that I contacted emailed or called me back (or their assistants did). It never hurts to get another opinion. Of course, one's financial situation might prevent the transfer to another hospital, but it's worth a try. It's all just so frustrating to see her having to go through all of this.

She's still in my prayers. I'm sorry for all that she and your family are having to go through.

Michelle got out of surgery about two hours ago. The surgeon had a change in plan after he started the surgery. He decided it would be best to leave in a drain line coming out of Michelle's head and attach it to a adjustable valve that is outside of her head. He was afraid that if he completely sealed up her head that there was a good possibility that her head would swell and cause the brain lining to tear again. The doctor will now concentrate on fighting the infection that Michelle has and give her head more time to heal. I know this will all take time.

David talked to the doctor and the doctor is pretty sure Michelle has staphylococcal meningitis based on how the culture is looking so far so that is what the doctor is treating her for. The doctor said it might take 3 weeks to get rid of the infection. Probably in a few days or maybe next week the doctor will slowly start closing the shunt valve and see what happens. It looks like Michelle will be in the hospital for several more weeks. Whatever it takes.

I'm so sorry that your family has had to endure such a long hard road. Thank God you have each other. Michelle is a strong girl that will pull through this. I think that unfortunately when you are at a hospital as long as her,you're exposed to all sort od germs,and she probably got in in there. I was in the hospital from October 2002 until February of 2003 I had a bowel obstruction go septic. I too had alot of ups and downs. Spent 3 week in ICU with over 1000 different organisms growing in my body,from the infections. I truly believe in prayer,that's why I wanted to share with you my story. God is with you and yours,and trust me he hears all of our prayers. Hang tough,and thank you for keeping us posted. Hugs to you and yours.

Thanks for sharing your story. I pray you are in good health now. I know these staph infections are getting more and more common. I had lost track of all of Michelle's surgeries so David told me today that Michelle has had 8 surgeries on her head and 6 other surgeries involving her stomach/abdomen area. The pain she has endured has been horrible.

David just called again and he said the doctor knocked Michelle out for the day because she was starting to really hurt and she was experiencing some nausea. I pray tomorrow will be a better day for her. It really hurts me seeing her suffer the way she has.

Michelle still does not have her medicare so right now she has to go to Ben Taub hospital. This is the third brain surgeon to operate on Michelle. These are all good doctors, they rotate around from the other hospitals in the Houston area. Her current doctor is from Methodist Hospital and is suppose to be one of the best. All the doctors have just told Michelle that her case is a very difficult one and she has had so many setbacks that were not preventable. I really think the doctors are good but I just think the hospital has so much going on that some things are just not done in a timely manner. There have also been a few mistakes, like them overlooking the abscess in her abdomen. This current doctor seems to really care about Michelle and he goes to see her several times a day. He is determined to make Michelle well again. I pray he is successful.

I'm glad that you feel like she is in good hands with the doctor's that she has now. Houston does have some great doctors. It's all just so frustrating. I know that when my brother was sick, they kept saying "he has another infection and we just don't know what it is". I guess with him, it was more a matter of "It does not really matter what it is because he's too far gone already", though. I'm so happy to hear that her new surgeon is determined to find a way to help make her well again. I'm glad they decided not to take out the drains, too. My mother died about 7 years ago from a staph infection she got from having back surgery. She was 72 years old. The doctors were very negligent in her case. They just did not give her proper care. She had an HMO health plan. By the time they realized what was wrong it was too late, she had turned septic. What I learned from what happened to my mom haunts me to this day. You have to really stay on top of these doctors and demand things sometimes or nothing will get done. David, Michelle's husband, as been very good about bugging the doctors and hospital staff when he thinks Michelle is not getting treated right. We just wish some things has happened quicker. Thank you so much for your prayers.

Michelle sounded a little better this morning but she is still really hurting. She said her whole body is stiff and hurting, she has tremendous headaches and her neck is stiff. I am sure some of these symptoms are being cause by the staphylococcal meningitis. Michelle has been totally bedridden for so long now that I am sure that is not helping matters any. I pray she starts feeling better soon.

Yes, it's true that a family member really needs to watch the care that an ill person is given in the hospital. I saw so many mistakes with both my Mother-in-law and my brother, and both died from things that were not directly related to the illnesses that they went into the hospital with. Both ended up with terrible infections and clotting related problems.

Glad she's able to talk to you a little bit today. I pray she gets some relief from all of her suffering soon. Just laying in a bed that long would hurt so bad, even for a healthy person. Now, you and your family have to be extra careful hanging around the hospital with all this flu going around, too.:eek:
