| Help! My puppy has leg problems This will probably be long... First, I bought a puppy that was ACA, which I never researched on what exactly that was because my other yorkie is AKC. When we went to get him he was with two other boys who were walking around just find and I didn't pay attention to him not moving. I just saw his face and thought I had to have him. When we brought him home and put him on the floor. He would not move. I just assumed he was depressed but when he did move he drug his hind legs. Another thing, when he actually got up on his hind legs he couldn't even stand a minute without his legs just falling down. When I hold him up his legs go on each side up in the air like he's almost doing the split. I've touched his legs and they don't feel right. They aren't in place and when he tries to scratch his back or anything on his body his leg is up in the air like a cat's. Which isn't normal. I called the breeder the next morning and she told me to call her back in couple days to see if he just was still upset and that he needed time to adjust. Well two days later nothing. Same problems and I feel really guilty because I want to keep him but I'm about to attend grad school and I know I couldn't care for a dog that has problems like this one does. The lady told me to bring him to her on monday so she could take him to her vet. This is my concern. I hope she doesn't blame me for any problem he has. Im really worried and don't know what to think. My husband and I are taking him to our vet tomorrow morning and see what happens and then Im planning on telling the breeder that I just have to give him back. Does anyone have advice? |

| I am so sorry. Definitely the trip to the vet will give you more info. Then you will have soemthing to go on. What type of contract and/or warrenty did the breeder offer on the pup?

| There was no written contract. I talked to her on monday and got the puppy later that evening. I just worry because If she wants her vet to look at him, what if she causes a problem about the whole thing. Im just really sad about it but we are going to take him to the vet tomorrow so that will at least give us some info before the lady tells me something crazy..like we caused the problem |

| believe me honey.. that breeder KNEW that puppy had a problem and did not tell you about it because she thought she could get one over on you. DO NOT let her do that to you. Don't be afraid to stand up to her and insist she refund your money. Next time go to a reputable breeder who will stand behind their puppy

| Definitely go to the vet, and ask him if he would mind talking to your breeder's vet if necessary. This does not sound like anything that you could have caused in a few days. It sounds like a problem that the puppy was born with. But gather your information about the puppy before you go back to the breeder. Good luck.

| I agree that your first step is an unbiased medical opinion. Make sure that they write down the diagnosis and keep a copy. Use that information to work with the breeder. I would NOT get another puppy from her. I would just get a refund. I'm so sorry that you're having to go through this, but I'm very glad that you found YT. Welcome!

| Looking for an update - wondering what the vet said? And how this little one is doing.

| I live in Florida but we got our Yorkie from a Breeder in Tennessee who used to live in Florida and had excellent recommendations. She gave us a contract that stated she would take him back within a year if there were problems and give us another dog or our money. When he was about 6 months old he started hiking up one back leg when he ran. Our vet said he had luxating patella which means the knee joint pops out and does not go back in place. Our last Yorkie had the same thing but his popped back and he never limped. Brady's started getting worse when he was a little over a year old and the breeder recommended a vet in Ft. Lauderdale who was highly recommended and she said he should have surgery. We decided to take him to an orthopedic vet who said the same thing. He said we could wait but we would take the chance of it getting too bad to correct. The breeder offered several times to take him back but I couldn't let my sweetheart go back. She said no one in his ancestry had the problem so it was just an unusual thing. I trust her and she paid $1,100. toward the $1,600. surgery. He had the surgery in July and was in a cast for a few weeks. It was kind of funny to watch him trying to get into his bed etc. but he got good at it after a few days. Well, it is 4 months since the surgery and he is still "hiking" up the leg but not as much and not all the time. When I took him to the vet last week he said to wait until January and then if he wasn't improved he would take the pins out which was a very simple procedure and he wouldn't charge for it. I really like this vet. If the breeder hasn't taken your dog to her vet yet make sure you go with her. Florida had "puppy lemon laws" and I would suggest you check it out on the computer to see if your state has them.. Good luck and let me know what is going on.. Lorraine

| Agbender80, this really isnt good. I wanted to cry when i read your post. I have a feeling you have been scammed...no i know you have been scammed. You wanted to know what the ACA is- American Canine Association....well you know what....i cant find much of anything about it...all i know is that its a cheaper version of AKC expect you cant enter you dog in to anything AKC related like dog shows...but mostly what i found while i googled it was a lot of people trying to find out what it was...and alot of what i read said it was boogus...even the website wouldnt tell you anything here it is: American Canine Association Home Page and the FAQ page is blank. So to me thats a red flag! Red Flag #2 - you never saw that puppy walking around....so that means he was doing this before you had him...which means the Breeder must of noticed...and Knew but wanted you to take him so she could get rid of him...because she knew he wouldnt sale. Red Flag #3 NO WRITTEN CONTRACT! Breeders make written contracts in order to make the purchase of a pup legal and to protect themselves and well as you if something like this goes wrong. If you had a written contract you could take her to court and get your money back -no problem Think of the contract as a receipt when you go to the grocery store....if you bought something that was rotten and wanted to return it you would need a receipt to get your money back. DONT LET HER TAKE THE PUPPY! Take the puppy to your vet...and find out whats wrong with him....then call your lawyer...and find out if there is a way to get your money back with out a contract...and if you can....take that B***h to court! Im not trying to scary you...but action needs to be taken....There are alot of "breeders" out their that do this...and its sicken! If you have any questions or need any help please leave me a message. Good luck dear! |
