Need Boarding Rec for SC or GA Hi everyone, we are headed to Disney in less than a week. I have boarding scheduled for our little Abbie at her local vet, but would love to find a recommended cageless boarding facitliy in our area. She is only 5 months old and I'm worried sick about her having to remain in a cage all day. She is used to lounging on the couch and sleeping with us at night. I am willing to travel North or South. I am about one hour from both Charleston SC and Savannah GA. Can anyone recommend a boarding facility in either area? Thanks!

I don't know of a boarding facility close to you but I do know that Disney has very nice kennels at each of their parks. At least 4 years ago they did and they only charged $6/ day and you were allowed to move your dog to the kennel at whichever park you were visiting at no additional charge. Of course not all of the hotels allow dogs. If you did decide to take your puppy along you, you would then get to spend every night with him. When I just had my one yorkie, I took him everywhere with us. Now with 3, I usually have to board them. I just thought I'd throw that out there.

Just posted this on another board. What do you think about leaving her in the room? We are traveling to Disney in less than one week. I have a boarding appointment for my baby at the local vet office. However, I am a nervous wreck. My husband is active duty military and we have no family in the area to babysit for us. I only have two options: 1. Leave her at the vet and worry about her being stuck in a cage all day 2. Take her to Disney with us (we found a pet friendly hotel) and leave her in the room all day. She is wee-wee pad trained, so leaving her inside the hotel room wouldn't be a problem as far as that is concerned. However, I'm worried about her having to spend 10-12 hours alone (traveling back to the hotel during the day just isnt' an option) in the hotel room. At least she could have the TV on and have free reign of the room and she would get to sleep with us at night. I can leave her toys, food, water, etc. But, what would I do when room service came in? Could I just tell the front desk about the situation? She isn't a barker, so that wouldn't be a problem either. Is it too much to expect her to spend that many hours alone, or is it no different than having to spend all day in a cage? I just dont' know what to do. Can someone with experience please give advice? Thanks, Heather

I read your other post, too, and if it were me, I would take her with me. She will be MUCH MUCH happier in a hotel room with her toys, tv on, etc. and being able to sleep with you at night then stuck at the vet in a cage all day everyday. Especially since she is so young, I would take her with you. You can also look into those kennels that the parks provide. That way, if she really just HATES staying in the hotel room by herself, you can put her in the kennel at whichever park you're at. I'm sure if you stay at a pet-friendly hotel that the cleaning crew and staff will know what to do. Just let them know upon arrival that you do indeed have a pet. I'm sure it won't be a problem at all....especially since she isn't a barker and is pee pad trained. If you decide not to take her with you, maybe you can get a pet sitter. That is what we ALWAYS do when we go on vacation. We have never boarded our dogs. You can ask arround for recommendations or look in the phonebook for one. Call around and get references if you find one in the phonebook, get them to come over and meet her, etc. etc. Good luck with your decision!

I would still consider the kennels at the park versus leaving her in the hotel room. I would be scared that one of the maids would accidently let her out or scare her. I know that they spoiled mine at the Disney kennels and got him out of his cage several times to play with him. Yorkies are just so irresistable. I think taking her with you would be less stressful than the vet's kennel. If you do leave her in the hotel room during the day, could you construct some kind of pen for her so the maids wouldn't have to worry about her? I have a foldable pen that works great for that. Some hotels require them to be kept in a pen if you are not there. I'd check with the hotel and see how they normally handle it. If they can wait to clean your room until you are there, then I would be totally comfortable leaving a puppy in the room. Do you drive through Atlanta on your way? I could babysit for you. My yorkie is 6 1/2 months old now and would love to play with her. He is also pee pad trained (well 90% of the time anyway). I also have a chihuahua and a jack russell / s**tzu mix. I work but am able to go home for lunch for an hour and a half and only have a 7 hour day. My dogs have free run of the first floor during the day.

Thank you so much for your offer. I just spoke with husband and it looks like Abbie will be taking her first trip to Disney. We have a play yard that we are going to take with us to the hotel. The maid can just sit her over in it to clean the room. We will try to leave her in the room for the first day and if it doesn't work, then we can board her at the Disney Kennels for only $6 a day. At least we will get to spend time with her in the mornings and evenings. (Don't they say that dogs have no sense of time and 5 hours may as well be 5 minutes?) I'm sure she will sleep all day and be ready to play when we get home in the evenings. I'm sure we won't be out late every night since our daughter is only 8 and can't last 12 hours straight at the parks. Thanks again for helping me to decide. It feels like a huge burden has been lifted. I know I wouldn't have enjoyed my trip if I had boarded her.

Yeah!!! I am so happy for Abbie. She will probably do great in the room and will sleep most of the time you are gone. Have fun.

YAY! I'm SO glad that you figured everything out and now you can relax and just think about enjoying your trip! She is going to have SO much fun being with her family! You are such good yorkie parents to take her with you! I'm sure you'll be in the room a lot more than you expect, too, since your daughter is only 8. I remember when I was young and went to Disney, I got tired out real quick. Your daughter will probably want to stay around the hotel some and swim in the pool and stuff. Have a fun trip!!!!!!!!

| you can keep the sign on the door for no room service. if you did want room service, most hotels require the dog be crated while they are there. for their safety and the dogs safety. If I was closer I'd offer to keep you baby for you. I do in home petsitting and it's wonderful for them since they get free range of my kitchen. and if they're especially good (haha my favorites) they usually get free range of the house. You should check with your vet, any local doggie bakeries, boutiques, or daycares and ask if they know of anyone who does anything similar. I know when I keep babies, the only time they go in their crates is for when they're eating and to sleep at night. If you can't take her, finding someone like that would be wonderful for her.

I don't know what I was thinking, but we will definitely leave the Do Not Disturb Sign on the door. I can make our own beds and get fresh linens in the evenings. My husband is in the USMC and we are not near family, so they aren't able to sit for us. I have several friends that I would trust, but as luck would have it, they are all going out of town for that weekend. I wish you were closer also. I know she would love hanging out with some other doggies for a week. I'm sure she would wiggle her way into your heart and would have free range of the house in no time flat

hehe, I bet she would too! Maybe it's just that I'm biased towards yorkies, but most...no i take that back...all of the yorkies that stay with me regularly have free range of my house. lol Even though you're taking her with you this time, it would definately be something to look into when you get back in town. Just to have for future referances. Sometimes I feel like I can;t even go on vacation for fear that my clients would have a heart attack if they needed me to keep their babies and I wasn't here! lol There has to be someone nearby to you that does the same thing that I do. It's just a matter of searching. I don't really advertise myself a lot except to the smaller dog owners who come in for grooming and then the exceptional big dog who I know I can handle along with my own two big boys. I would definately ask around when you get back. Have a GREAT trip though!

How did Abbie do? Did she do well on vacation? Just wondered if you had a good vacation with her.
