| Yorkie is scratching and losing hair My baby girl, has done this now for 3 years especially this time of the year, she scratches so bad that her hair is falling out or just breaking off. We have her on steroids for flea allergies, bathe her in oatmeal shampoo and conditioner and she is on Royal Canine food. Can someone help us, this is miserable for us and for her. |

| Royal Canin food makes my Tibbe itch within an hour or so of eating it every time I've tried him on it. You might try another food in case the food is causing the allergic reaction.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Hi and WELCOME to YT - so glad you found us! I have dealt with enviro allergies with 2 of my kiddos - pollens are just horrid here in Phoenix, and all year round here too. First, stop the oatmeal shampoo - Vet Derms will actually tell you to avoid these oatmeal shampoos, despite the myth that they're supposed to help. Instead, try something like this or this (or both). It sounds like your kiddo's allergies are only seasonal (not year round), is that correct? If so, then usually steroids or Temaril P works best. However, if that's not working you may want to try Atopica -- it requires about 6 weeks to ramp up the med, after which time its therapeutic effect can be more fully evaluated. During the ramp up, it's okay to continue the steroids for relief. If Atopica DOES work, then next year what you'd want to do is to ramp up a good 8 weeks before her itchy season begins. For my Marcel, I use Atopica all year round; I also did allergy testing on him and he gets a custom desensitization serum. You may also want to switch to a food that is a bit less carb based and more protein based. Some dogs get itchy with corn and Royal Canin def contains corn. You could also ask your vet about giving Science Diet DD food, which can help skin issue dogs. Here is a thread with more info re. allergies: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/die...tart-here.html

| Sensitive skin Riley, eight years old, does well on the Science Diet for Sensitive Skin. It also seems to relieve the problem of eye stains. I can tell within a day if he gets a treat that doesn't fit this diet. He is limited to one "Just 6" Rachel Ray chicken treat a day. |

| I'm fortunate enough to have a great dermatologist, who I've been seeing for several years for Sammi, my little Yorkie. Re the hair loss, she prescribed 3 mg melatonin a day, and it's almost stopped the hair loss. Sammi has allergies and is on Royal Canin, as well as an allergy med called Atopica. She still scratches at times, and I usually treat it with Benadryl cream on the bad spots. Hope this helps. |
