Reverse Sneezing Dezi use to have the reverse sneezing when she was a puppy and once in a while as an adult. She will be two in December. I took her to the park yesterday and she was playing and running around like a crazy happy dog. As we are leaving the park, I thought she grabbed something and swallowed it (my husband says she did not). Anyway, she started doing the reverse sneezing thing in the car. I checked her throat to make sure she did not have anything stuck in her throat. After that attack, she keeps doing it evertime she gets excited and when she is laying down she sounds like she is clearing her throat. She is eating and playing (when she does not get the attack) normally. The reverse sneezing noise is very scary and I am panicking. My vet is closed today. Should I wait until tomorrow to take her to the vet? Should I take her to the emergecy vet? How many days do they last with reverse sneezing attacks? Can grass and plants cause reverse sneezing (she loves to smell everything in the partk)? I do have some Torbutrol (medication) that the vet gave her last time she was having frequent reverse sneezing attacks, but is dated February 2007. Not sure what the shelf life is for Torbutrol. Do you think I made it worst when I stuck my finger in her throat to see if she has something stuck? Sorry for all the questions, but she is having these attacks more than the norm.

| Keely gets it every now and then and sometimes it is little and lasts a few seconds and a few times it was really bad and keeps acting up through the day/night. The only thing that seems to get her to stop is when I hold her and place my index finger and thumb on the side of her mouth and press in so she opens up and breathes. I would just keep an eye on her and take her tomorrow, but then again that is something totally up to you. Quick question though. You said she never really did it until after you got home from the dog park right? Perhaps, and not to freak you out or scare you, she caught Kennel Cough from another dog there. Google it and see if she has any other symptoms listed and if so then maybe the emergecy vet wouldn't be all too bad of an idea.

I've kept her calm all day and she keeps getting it once in a while. I do not think its from the park, we went to a regular park, we walked while my husband rode his bike, but then again, she probably got something from the grass. Its really weird because she has done it before, but not a whole day. It does stop when I put my finger on her nose, so I think it is reverse sneezing. I am heading off to vet first thing in the a.m. I will post the results. Thanks.

Reverse sneezing Some Yorkies do this all there life. It is common in toy breds. When she starts doing it, just reach down and open her mouth. This will allow her to catch her breath. It is a collasping of the wind pipe in tiny dogs. They usually do it when they get really excited and sometimes winded. It won't hurt them, but I always try to stop my daughter's Yorkie as soon as it happens. Then try to calm them some,David

It does not sound like collapse trachea (but I may be wrong). My sister's dog has a collapse trachea and the sound she is making is completly different from the sound my sister's dog makes, she's had collapse trachea for about 6 years not. She stopped the reverse sneezing and now she keeps licking herself. It could also be allergies. Will be leaving to the vet in a 1/2 hour. Will post later.

Got back from the vet and the vet ruled its allergies. Apparently, the park trip did not do her well. He also thinks she might have eaten some grass which irritated her throat. He gave her an anti-inflamatory shot, antibitics and allergy medication. Thanks for all the responses.

My one yorkies will be 5 in January, she has had reverse sneezing attacks most of her life..she comes over to me for me to pick her up when she's having one...I always rub her throat and then also have her give me kisses, this way she opens her mouth to breathe..when they're doing this, they're only breathing out of their noses, and this is why it's important to get them to open their mouths..It scares her so bad when she's doing this..
